Living in Ipswich?

Anyone had any experience of living in or around Ipswich ? Need to be closer to North Essex for my work but house prices seem to reduce dramatically once you get into Ipswich.

Yes, and yes you're right. It's generally cheaper than Colchester due to the extended London commute time.

What would you like to know?

Ive only been down to that area of the country once and it was a week too long. Far too flat, boring and miserable for my liking. However, i do live in Derbyshire which is 1000ft above sea level as opposed to 30ft below sea level in some parts of East Anglia

......Sorry OP - not much help from me! :)
But good luck in finding somewhere.

I live in Norwich and travel to Ipswich quite frequently for work. I'm not sure where you are living now in comparison but there really isn't much going on in Ipswich. Might it be worth looking at house prices in Cambridgeshire or actually in North Essex, assuming you haven't already?

House prices in Ipswich are cheap for a reason.
Finally, debt free for the first time since I was 18!:D

  • I live in Ipswich and have done for the last 5 years or so. Like any place there are good and bad areas but generally I really like the place. There's been a lot of development work done in the last couple of years, especially down by the waterfront whiIh now has more bars and restaurants and is where the new university is based. Having grown up in Suffolk I am probably a bit biased but Ipswich is a great base for exploring this region, is close to beautiful countryside and the coast and also gives you good access to London. As for living in Ipswich, the east of the town is the more desirable area. Hope that helps!

Wherever you want to live, use this for crime areas; http://maps.police.uk/

Zoom in. Try to avoid orange/red.
  • Cannon Fodder, thanks for posting that link. I'm considering various areas at the moment and that was very interesting!
  • I agree with Picklepickle. The North and Eastern area of Ipswich are the most desirable but also the most expensive due being the Northgate and Copleston school catchment areas. Whilst I agree that the Waterfront area is now superb and full of nice restaurants and bars, I have found Ipswich to have become more chavy over the last 5 years.
  • Woodbridge is a nice town and not too far from Ipswich.

I don't think that is limited to Ipswich. Its the whole country..
  • Thanks for all replies.I have looked at the police maps sites and Ipswich is HIGH on there but in relation to the rest of Suffolk, I guess, in relation to Hackney, its Darling Buds of May, its all relative?!
I have looked at a couple of places in Ipswich in the South East (Nacton Road area) and it did look a tad rough around the edges. Seen 1 place on rightmove in the Whitehouse area - 3 beds, conservatory, mahoosive south facing garden - £140k - anyone know this area?

I'm not too worried if theres 'not much going on'. I currently live in a small town in South Norfolk where even less goes on! Just be happy with a bit of space and less of a commute to Essex where I can shut my door and relax without worrying about my Alfa being keyed or Trev and Sharon copulating on my lawn :rotfl:
    Thanks again.
