Thank you all so much for your tips and offer to help more.

I will take a detailed look in the morning when I am at my best.
  • 1. Uninstall all unnecessary programs from Control Panel then restart your computer.
    2. Run Windows Update: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ then restart your computer.
    3. Run CCleaner: http://www.ccleaner.com
    4. Run an anti-virus scan: http://www.free-av.com/
    5. Run an anti-spyware scan: http://www.superantispyware.com/
    6. Run an anti-malware scan: http://www.malwarebytes.org/
    7. Check the VRAM settings i.e.:

    - Click Start, then open the Control Panel.
    - Click Performance and Maintenance, and then click System.
    - Click the Advanced tab.
    - Under Performance, click Settings.
    - Click the Advanced tab.
    - Under Virtual memory, click Change.
    - Under Drive [Volume Label], click the drive that contains the paging file (virtual memory) settings that you want to change. In almost every case, this will be your C: drive.
    - Click to select the "System managed size" option, then click Set.
    - Click OK three times and restart your computer.

    8. Run a defrag: http://www.defraggler.com/
    9. Investigate msconfig: http://netsquirrel.com/msconfig/
    10. Perform disk error checking: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315265

Other than the above I'd recommend re-installing XP / Vista.

Downolad http://www.malwarebytes.org/startuplite.php to clean out the startup. If you do this it’ll be quicker to reboot and use less memory YMMV.

1 Gig ram should make quite a difference

How much available space is there on the harddrive and what size harddrive is it?

When you say malware do you mean malwarebytes? If so please open malwarebytes, goto LOGS and post the WHOLE of the last log

    reboot
Download HIJACK THIS (Make sure you click 'DOWNLOAD LATEST VERSION')
    http://www.filehippo.com/download_hijackthis/
Click MAIN MENU then DO A SYSTEM SCAN AND SAVE A LOGFILE(Takes seconds) then post the log so we can see whats running
(do NOT do anything else with Hijack but scan and post the FULL log)

Hard drive C: is 38.7gb and free space is 10.2gb
Another drive showing D:backup with 12.5gb and free space 12.4gb

    Itis XP home edition SP3

This is the log for the Malwarebytes and I am doing the hijack this next.

    Thanks for your help!!!

When the laptop is running, how much memory is being used?

Press Crtl + Shift + Esc, a box will appear, go into Performance Tab and there is a bar graph type thing, which says something like PF Usage, how full is the bar? (or how much does it says underneath)

When on and no progarmme running (none I know of???) it says 399mb

Check your disk. If it's on the way out then this is a major cause of slow-down. Don't use Microsoft s/w, it's rubbish, try something like HD Sentinel - http://www.hdsentinel.com/download_hard_disk_sentinel.php

Thanks for this tip. Downloaded and report is excellent on performance and health. With 100% and 99% respectively.

The point is data/programs/shortcuts sat there doing nothing don't slow pc's down, deleting them or defragging makes no difference to speed.

    You're having a laugh aren't you??

A 90% full HD will run slower than a 10% full HD. Loads of shortcuts on the desktop will make the startup time slower than having only a few because Windows has to load the relevant icon for each. Defragging makes no difference to speed? You clearly have no idea what the process of defragmention is.

OP I recommend Piriform Defraggler to defragment your hard drive. This will improve overall performance. Also I would not recommend trying to modify/create/delete or format any partitions if you're not entirely confortable with that, if you do have to then ensure all important data is backed up.

Another tip, use the Firefox web browser instead of Internet Explorer for a faster and safer browsing experience.

For your memory, I would prefer to pay a bit more and get 2GB of quality branded RAM. The current stick of RAM is probably a cheap unbranded one. Also ensure someone that knows what they're doing installs the new RAM (or any other hardware) for you. If you do have to do it yourself then have a read up on how static can damage your hardware.

At the end of the day you will come to a point where there is not much else you can do because you're limited by the performance of your hardware, such as the microprocessor.

Excellent. Unless the health starts dropping sharply or goes under, say, 60%, you're OK.

If things are still slow and you've tried everything then it could well be your memory. 1Gb is really the minimum needed to run apps today and 3 or 4 preferable. Other than that it might just be time to upgrade.

As for defrag the key point I'd make is don't use the built-in Windows defrag as it doesn't work. If you've never defragged you'll get a speed increase but I doubt it will be particularly huge. Use the one already linked to or alternatively I use Aus Defrag (free) - http://www.auslogics.com/en/software/disk-defrag/download/ , which is far better than the Windows defragger and quick-defrags my four disks all at the same time in a 90 seconds (Windows takes 2 hours and is less efficient).

Also it's as well to keep an eye on your bandwidth. I use Bitmeter (free) - http://codebox.org.uk/pages/bitmeter2 - so I've always got a graph on my desktop of upload and download. You can then see if anything is using your bandwidth that shouldn't be, or if you're on wireless you'll be able to see if your bandwidth is being stolen.

    Thanks the182guy & artbaron

I have now put in the new RAM from my friend. It only increases from 512mb to 1gb but that alone has made a big difference. Prior to that I have taken off some software but need to sit with my daughter to find out what other software she can do without.

I also need her to take a look through her 'My Document' with view to paring that right down.

The only other thing is for me to look at msconfig to get rid of all the things running when I start up. I will need to make sure I only take off the right ones!!!!
