You're having a laugh aren't you??
OP has upgraded ram, performance has improved dramatically, they can defrag for 24 hours, and it won't have made anywhere near as much difference, because what's running and how much ram is available to run it in is what slows a pc down dramatically. How many milliseconds does it take to load a 2KB shortcut whether on a 90 percent full disk, or a 10 percent full disk?
Even 30 years ago, you'd be hard pushed to notice any difference after a defrag, disks, cacheing, and operating systems have come a long way since then!!

Nowhere did I say that a defrag would improve performance more than a RAM upgrade. In fact, looking at my post, I suggested a larger RAM upgrade to enjoy much higher performance.
So you agree that many shortcuts on the desktop slows down the startup time? I don't know if you were looking for a universal timeframe that it takes to load a single shortcut icon, well that does not exist. The length of time varies depending on many factors, most importantly the hardware.
I noticed the difference after defragging my HD. Why? Because over time, files get fragmented, and so accessing those files takes longer thus degrading performance.0 -
placebo effect maybe?
The point of my post was to stress the importance of concentrating on what is running at startup, rather than going through the old chestnuts of defrag, clean up your internet cache, uninstall programs, delete data, and you must upgrade ram.

Not sure how an article about Windows 7 has any relevance at all to OP who is using Windows XP. Also given that OP's machine is 4 years old and Windows 7 was released in Oct 2009.0 -

Please run COMBOFIX
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
Shut down your anti virus
Follow the simple instructions it gives
Post the COMPLETE log it creates here (Split into sections if need be) ~ if there are loads of 'SNAPSHOT' pages then leave them out
If it comes up with a RENAMING error then RIGHT click the exe file and RENAME and call it QWERTY (Making the complete file name 'QWERTY.exe') Or SAVE as 'QWERTY' on download:idea:0
