Can I just ask Z, since you're around, is £500 reasonable for a 17" laptop ideal for voice recognition and screen reading with 17" screen/Core 2 Duo T570 2GHz Laptop 17WXGA TFT 3GB Ram 250GB HDD DVD-RW Windows 7 12 Months warranty?
Cos I don't know anything about computers but it doesn't seem that good a spec, I'm sure I could get better from a high street store? It's what I've been awarded for DSA and it has to be from a small supplier.Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.0 -

What do they mean by "a small supplier"?"Follow the money!" - Deepthroat (AKA William Mark Felt Sr - Associate Director of the FBI)

It's a particular supplier, Barry Bennet in Lancashire. I'd prefer to get it myself and be reimbursed because I'm sure I can do better for the money.Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.0

It's not a dreadful price, maybe about £50-£70 over the odds - if you want more power, then cut down on the screen size. This makes it cheaper, which you can "spend" on more memory/bigger hard disk etc. Remember 17" is 17" that you will have to lug around, day in, day out.
Having a preferred supplier seems a bit strange."Follow the money!" - Deepthroat (AKA William Mark Felt Sr - Associate Director of the FBI)

I've dealt with the supplier before and their service is pretty bad - the laptop broke down, they took it away, kept it for a few weeks and returned it saying it had fixed, but the screen still wasn't working. I've just emailed to see if I can use another supplier.
The 17" screen is in bold, I think that's something I have to have for the software and stuff. I'm not too bothered about power, but I'd like it to be lightweight!Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.0 -

Software doesn't depend on the screen size. *Sometimes*, it depends on the screen resolution, but that's only for graphical stuff.
I use a 17" at home and it is not light. I use a 12" laptop at work, and it is light - maybe 1/2 to 1/3 of the weight."Follow the money!" - Deepthroat (AKA William Mark Felt Sr - Associate Director of the FBI)
