Messing with MBNA's head

Have just got off the phone with MBNA. I was sitting at home when I got a phone call . I have caller ID and it was blank and it was some woman in a call centre in India saying that she was calling from MBNA about my account and could I verify my details.

Thanks to a post I read a while ago, I refused to verify my details until she had verified hers and what account she was calling about. Cue left stage the manager talking in a pseudo american accent telling me "It's not a sales call, but an important call about your account, please tell me your date of birth under the data protection act."

me: " I work in England, in the NHS , dont quote the data protection act to me, I do this for a living., and dealing with sick people is far more important than someone who won't even reveal which account he is calling about"

him" well, call MBNA

me:" I'm not calling anyone back , tell them to put it in the post. For all I know you could be a fraudster living in Nigeria waiting to pounce on my account. If its so important, put it in writing"

him" call MBNA, thank you for you timem, good bye"

The thing is I know which account, its my Virgin cc. Which I am on track with my repayments, so I have no idea why they called.

But the point of my very very long waffling post, is I remembered what someone said early so I decided to do exactly the same thing. Can't remember who it was , but thanks! It certainly entertained me for forty minutes!:rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:

Well in a way the banks only have themselves to blame for encouraging us all to panic at identity theft. Not saying we shouldn't all be careful of course, but lots of them are using it to sell us protection products now. No financial institution would wrap your knuckles for using suspected identity theft as an excuse to not talk on the phone :D

Sweet, sweet justice. Well done on your telephone savvyness. Hey, a forty minute call from India probably cost them a little something plus the 2 peoples wages lol.
  • I have to admit I did something similar to a BT cs rep the other day. I was calling because someone had driven into the telephone pole outside our house and when they came round to reconnect things (3 days later) my house was not reconnected as we don't have a bt account. I wanted to find out if they'd charge me for replacing the line if i move back to them.

The cs rep insisting on verifying my ID even though i had no account:
He asked how i pay my phone bill - i asked if i was talking to BT or my cable company.
He sputtered that it was BT so I asked why he needed to know.
    I couldn't get a straight answer.
Nor could he tell me why he needed the name of my bank & my employment status.
Still wish I could buy a TARDIS instead of a house!

I expect that there are already many threads on this subject, but could someone clarify the law regarding these 'Asian' call centres.
I too am hassled by people calling - MBNA - India, HSBC India and the Philippines. It is often difficult to understand (and that is NOT a racist comment) because of their accents and grammar - I speak three foreign languages, but would not contemplate ringing people in, say, Germany and asking for their personal details. The calls always seem to be at the most inconvenient times imaginable. The caller is obviously reading from a script, because he/she can never answer your questions. They expect you to drop everything and talk to them - the list is endless!!
I can understand the economics, for the UK company, but this is not reflected in their charges.
I am NOT, nor do I profess to be, a Qualified Debt Adviser. I have made MANY mistakes and have OFTEN been the unwitting victim of the the shamefull tactics of the Financial Industry.
If any of my experiences, or the knowledge that I have gained from those experiences, can help anyone who finds themselves in similar circumstances, then my experiences have not been in vain.
