Injector Knock Advisory

I've just had my car serviced, it's an 04 Mondeo 2.0TDCi with 120k on the clock.
I was told that there is some injector knock but not to worry about it at the moment. What is this and what are the effects? I can hear a noise when I accellerate that sounds like knocking but do I need to worry about it? The mechanic talked to me on the phone about it but I couldn't hear very well as it was a very bad line - he said it might cost around £90 to fix as it might be to do with the engine management system, or at least that's what I thought he said.
Car seems to be running fine apart from that slight knocking noise.
Thanks.

Its improper combustion in one or more cylinders. The cylinder doing the knocking can usually be found by putting the handle end of a screwdriver to your ear, and holding the sharp end on top of each cylinder.
It most likely isn't going to be fatal but it would be a good idea to have it looked at, as it will only get worse. Whatever you do don't be tempted to put thicker oil in, or any miracle solutions, because they will only mask the problem, not fix it.0 -
Diesel knock can be down to injector or injector timing.
If the spray pattern is wrong, you can get incorrect combustion, which can eventually damage the head and/or piston.
Timing can be down to the ecu, and can have the same effect.
If you're keeping the car it's worth fixing.0 -
Some diesel fuel additive would probably be a good place to start then if spray pattern is important.0

tis the start of a knackerd injector you can try a couple of tins of good injector cleaner and a good thrashing otherwise it will need a new injector0

recon injectors or timing adjustment i would say. when injectors wear out i doubt any amount of fuel treatment will repair this.
personally i would just run it as is if it isnt causing any real problems for you regarding economy, performance or emitting black smoke....work permit granted!0 -
£90 to fix, wow thats cheap.
Injectors are approx £200 each and then require coding in with specialist equipment.

we had a 52 plate tdci mondeo which had new injectors twice! costing £1000 a time..... we had to go to a ford garage to have these replaced calibrated and turned on in the ecu. i would advise getting rid of the car if this is the problem...it will do nothing but cost you more money.!
our second set of injectors failed within 3 to 4 months so we took it back to fords and they said as we didnt have a genuine ford fuel filter they couldnt do alot about it, just charge us to replace it! delphi didnt want to know either and wouldnt even speak to us! the filter we had fitted was one that ford used when servicing a car but delphi classed them as inferior! good luck!spanky xx

So far so good, the car is still running well enough and I've not had any work done on this problem, will see what the garage says at the next service due in about six weeks. I've done around 10k since I posted this and am getting around 60 mpg so it seems to be running OK. Doesn't seem to be any worse in terms of the noise it makes, wish me luck!:A0

!
My injectors are on 140,000 miles and fine.
And if you go on the Mondeo Enthusiasts Group, you'll find the cost is nearer £600 than £1000 and it doesn't need to be done at a Ford dealership.
There's a link of Delphi injector reconditioners here:

From the thread on the Mondeo Owners Group forum...
"The price for a reconditioned injector from Merlin is £115 + 15% VAT = £132 x 4 = £530. There is the fitting and recoding on top. Recoding should be around £40 as long as you don't go to a main dealer......fitting will vary on price. It is a 15 min job to remove and refit the injectors and in reality shouldn't cost anywhere near the £125 Ford charge."
So as you can see, you paid well over the odds.

You'd do better if you went to the Mondeo Enthusiasts forum if you think the injectors are £200 each to be done.0
