Want a laugh - bathroom quote!

I posted a while back about our 2 metre square bathroom. You guys thought £3.5 - £5k would do it nicely. It needs clearing back to plaster, skimming, usual plumbing for bath with shower unit, toilet and sink with small vanity units and full tiling with tiled floor. We had a designer round and told her our budget was £5k max.

We've chosen some nice fittings totalling around £3000 for everything (including lights, towel rail etc) and had the recommended fitter round for a quote. For clearing, repair and installation the quote was £5000:eek:

Time to hit the phones I think.

Yep £8k. That looks about right, but I'd expect the kitchen to be done as well!

But you have set a budget of £5k and allocated 60% of that to fittings. Does this include tiles? The money left has to allow for removal oof the old suite, a skip, plaster, fixings, pipework, labour for plasterers, tilers, plumbers etc. You cant reasonably expect that you will get it all fitted for £2k. You really need to think the price of the suite etc. Be realistic.

as a rule of thumb, total building work costs are 70% labour costs.
which is almost right in the above case.

£5k of £8k is about 65% so ormus is right in that sense. But £2k of £5k is only 40%. So in terms of the rule od thumb, the fitter quoting £5k is correct, but there is no way the OP will get all the fitting done for £2k

yes it can vary a lot due to posh materials being chosen ie kitchen or a bathroom.
also certain trades the materials are very cheap.
ie plastering. maybe the labour costs there would be say 90%.
changing a tap washer would be 99% labour.
