HELP Tiscali - MAC code-Cancellation

Can anyone help me??

I have had a nightmare with Tiscali broadband (suprise suprise) I am connected via their 2MB service and everything had been going fine till about 2 weeks ago, when my connection speed dropped to below 512KBPS all the time.

I phoned/email Tiscali helpdesk and what a lot of help they were..NOT.Finally today when i called for about the 5th times, my connection came back at 2.3MB but doing a brandwith test was still the same low speed.

Finally had enough and been with them over 12 mths decided to just cancel asap. The so called customer services rep was just blatantly rude and confirmed to me an end date of 31/08/06 and something would be reomoved after 10/14 thereafter. But when i asked about a MAC code was rudely told i do not need one. Is this correct, he stated i was connected via some loop think so MAC numbers dont apply and if i did not like that answer go to OFCOM. If i could swear i really would.

I am trying to see what i can now register to for broadband and some companies dont even acknowledge I have a broadband enable line, our exchange takes up 5.5MB.

i really do not know what to do, i am really end the of my tether.

Any help would be appreciated.

  • Hi Slates,

You may be on part of the Tiscali LLU network - partial LLU providers are able to provide MACs. I know this because we get migrations in from LLU networks.

Tiscali have signed the Ofcom Voluntary Code for Migrations. I'd ring them again and bring it to their attention that they've signed the code and you want your MAC. If they withhold it from you then it's a matter for OFCOM.

    Best of luck!

    Kind regards,

Depends tho, if they're ceasing your service then theres no need for a MAC as there is nothing to migrate.
  • Not sure I understand what goes on in the broadband world, so please tell me where i'm being daft.

I fail to understand why a marker needs to be put on the line, but as they are, and the line is rented to me, why won't BT remove it on my authorisation?
As far as I can understand any ISP could contact BT [without my knowledge] and get a marker put on my line thus preventing me from going elsewhere.
[Tiscali held my line for 5 months after my cancellation ] I was told that it costs them so they won't do that, but as I hear that people go back rather than go without I reckon Tiscali gain more than they lose so they will continue to hold people to ransom.

Finally as my line should be capable for broadband and phone calls, is not BT in breach of sale of goods and services act in charging me full price for a line from which they will not remove the marker from at my request?

A marker isnt something placed on the line out of spite by a service provider. A marker refers to either, an existing broadband service, one thats being provided or one thats being ceased. Also can refer to an LLU service and any incompatible rented products on your telephone line.

An End User cannot instigate a ceasing of their broadband without going through their service provider. BT Wholesale's contracts are with their customers (ie. Service providers) and end users instigating ceases would not have the permission of their service provider (ie. the contract that the end user has is with the ISP not BT Wholesale).

The bottom line is you just have to put pressure on your service provider to get either a MAC or a cease of the broadband off the line
