Tips for taking dog on UK holiday
Triangle
Morning all
Myself, DH and our one year old Westie are going away for a week at the end of June to the south coast
Just looking for any tips from people who take their doggys away with them - things to remember, to do etc. He has his travelling crate so car safety is all sorted.
Many Thanks
Oh, and I have a posted a thread on the UK holiday board about dog friendly places to visit in Kent - if anyone can offer any suggestions it would be much appreciated. Thanks

I always used to take a light-weight plastic bowl for water and a bottle of water for her when we went out (plastic is lighter for you to carry when you're out walking).
Have a lovely time

Ive put a few links on your other thread - you may also want to contact the Kent tourist office and ask them for dog friendly beaches/walks etc.
Taking dogs on hols - their food bowls and food, their beds, water to carry with you, poo bags, make sure the dog is chipped and also wearing a collar and disc - just in case he gets lost, favourite toy, blanket.

Make sure that their tag has your mobile number on it. If they are chipped then you can notify petlog or whoever of a holiday so they will know where to contact you.
You also get plastic things to clip on to water bottles which are nice and space saving and give your dog something to drink out of.
If you are going to be walking through fields etc then make sure that their flea/tick/worming treatments are up to date
Microfibre towels are nice and small and soak up water well if your dog gets wet.. can't really have a wet dog running around in a hotel/rented place!0 -
We take an home made first aid tin with us. Some antiseptic cream, bite ease, a bandage. Some TCP, rescue remedy in case of car sickness. Some sun tan cream ( a must for white dogs)
A favorate toy, food bowls.
A good tip is to use bottled water, that way a change in water wont give a tummy ache.

Chris n TJRIP TJ. You my be gone, but never forgotten. Always in our hearts xxxHe is your friend, your partner, your defender, your dog.You are his life, his love, his leader. He will be yours, faithful and true, to the last beat of his heart. You owe it to him to be worthy of such devotion.0 -
Tilly comes nearly everywhere with us, so it's almost second nature to pack for her!
Let's have a think...- a list of dog friendly places
- dog food & bowls
- water - we use a sports cap bottle, she'll actually drink out of it if we squeeze it gently!
- treats & any training gear, like a clicker
- collar, harness, extending lead, normal lead, dog tether thing, like this
- poo bags
- small fleece blanket - helps Tilly to settle if she has to stay on the floor, and light to carry
- dog bed
- small first aid kit inc. tick remover
- travel ID tag - we use a key tag like this, so your dog doesn't get returned home when you're on hols (write/type in your temp details)
- a number for a local vet, just in case, and your own vet's number too
- ball & toy
- coats & jumper - you never know what the British weather will do!

Have fun! We love taking Tilly on hols with us! :happyhear"No matter how little money and how few possesions you own, having a dog makes you rich." - Louis Sabin0 -
Just remembered towels.
Vital if he's likely to roll in something you'd rather he didn't and you need to bath him.
Probably useful to have one anyway with the English weather

The things I found most useful to take were:
Lightweight blankets / sheets to cover any furniture or light coloured carpets
Water bottles
First aid kit - just a few basic dressings, wound powder
Put the number of a local Vet in your mobile
Spare temporary id tags
Hope you have a great time xxSome days you're the dog..... most days you're the tree!

Guys you are fantastic
Thanks for all the great tips so far!
Couple of questions...
Chris n tj - Can you please tell me more about the doggy sun cream and where I might buy some?
Georgina - what a great list! What's the tether thing/how does it work?
Thanks again

I can't believe I forgot a towel!
The tether thing screws in the ground, so if you're camping/picnicing etc you can secure your doglet. I think I got mine from a pound shop ages ago - shop around, they're all pretty much of a muchness.
I don't think Chris n TJ means doggy sun cream - I've used normal human stuff on Tilly's nose before, but she does just tend to lick it off! I just try to monitor her sunbathing - if she had her way she would only move when it got cold! :cool2:"No matter how little money and how few possesions you own, having a dog makes you rich." - Louis Sabin0 -

I though he meant there was some special suncream on the market just for pooches! :rotfl::o:rotfl:I didn't even think about suncream for pup, will see what he thinks to it being on his nose!:)
Thanks so much again for all your info - a tether is excatly the sort of thing I was thinking about
