When we start out on the DFW trail we do loads of "big stuff" that makes quite a difference to our situation. These include having our lightbulb moment, cutting up the credit cards and cancelling Sky and the gym.

But once we have done the bigger stuff, we often feel that we are not making the same amount of progress, when in fact the small steps are helping us form good financial habits and helping us get closer everyday to staying in control and becoming debt free, or staying debt free

Examples could be charging your phone up at work instead of at home to save your electricity, hanging washing out instead of using the tumble dryer or leaving your purse/wallet at home to avoid the risk of spending.

So be proud of those small steps, they really are important :money:

Good morning everyone - hope all ok todayHScurtsey.gif
I am soooo glad I'm off work today, I had a rotten sleep - was very sore, the nasty Crohn's realy made a comeback last night, don't know why, was Ok during the day:(

So, today will be a very quiet day - was going to nip to college and see my tutors, discuss my options, but doubt I'll go far today - as far as my bed?!?!

List:
  • check banking
  • daily scratchcard
  • meal from plan tonight - sausgaes, hm wedges
  • water heating on briefly
  • packed lunch for dd2 to school
  • read paper online
  • sleep!

Hi Fay - another question or two re gardening!
I'd like to grow strawberries too - what's the best container for them? I've not got round to my seeds yet, must do it this week - I bought tomatoes, cucumber, radish and lettuce for now.
When#s the best time to grow flowers? And can you recommend easy ones, I have one flower bed that we filled with crazy nasturtiums last year;)

And if I want toms etc to come in a steady supply, do I grow them at different times or will they grow new ones? (Sorry if I'm asking silly questions!)

    Thanks lovely:A

Hi Fay - another question or two re gardening!
I'd like to grow strawberries too - what's the best container for them? Milly anything is good from a big tub/small pot/window boxes are fun/old bucket - ie anything - the thing about strawberries is (their name implies this )- their fruits don't like to be touching the soil once they start fruiting or they rot - so you can put a layer of mulch over the soil (ie straw or a layer of gravel over the soil - so the fruits don't rot - something that doesnt dry out too quickly is great as they do need to swell up but don't want to be soggy - so anything will do :D

I've not got round to my seeds yet, must do it this week - I bought tomatoes, cucumber, radish and lettuce for now. Radishes are great because you'll have veggies in about 3 weeks or so! So they are good to sow every 2-3 weeks. Get your cucumber and tomatoes in asap and sow some lettuce outdoors when you're ready - a peedie tray of these on the windowsill will give you a head start!!

When#s the best time to grow flowers? If you're growing annuals (often called hardy annuals) then anytime now outside they will pop up where ever you pop them. If you're growing 'hanging basket/container' bedding anytime after the chance of frost has passed by.

And can you recommend easy ones, I have one flower bed that we filled with crazy nasturtiums last year;) I love nasturtiums - they are one of my favourites - they might pop up again as they are great at self seeding - easy things that will go with this are:

CALENDULA (marigolds or English marigolds) lovely for a cut flower and can use the petals in cakes etc. Sow direct they are really easy!!And last for ages will look great with nasturtiums..........
Poached egg plants are lovely - again really easy and the flowers scramble around (scramble get it!!) and have white outer edge of petals and bright yellow inards like fried eggs - dead easy)
Poppies are lovely - loads of varieties and you just sprinkle them around
Cornflowers - are lovely as well and you get lots of lovely colours
Statice - is great to sow direct and gives you those everlasting flowers for the winter indoors
Sweetpeas are another great flower - you can grow these from seeds or from mini-plants that you'll get soon for about 99p a pot - pop in some canes and watch them grow up the canes quickly
NIgella is good as well (love in the mist) dead easy and the flowers are lovely - and you can use the seeds to put on your bread if you make your own :)

(PS YOU might want to try some mangetouts in the garden as they are easy and the kids can pick the pods in the garden and eat them -but don't confuse the two!!)

And if I want toms etc to come in a steady supply, do I grow them at different times or will they grow new ones? I think you can grow a few different varieties to acheive this but fruits tend to all ripen slowly anyway so maybe for this year grow one or if you're brave - two varieties - or sow your own and buy a plant of a different type when you see one (99p ish) or swap some of your plants for someone elses. I like growing bush varieties of tomatoes because I'm lazy!!

I grew enough tomatoes last year to almost replace our tinned tomatoes (we've still got about 2 dozen tomatoes left!!) - by freezing them as red cannon balls when they were ready (skins on in a box in the bottom of the freezer) as I was only wanting them for making pasta sauce they were brilliant. when I ran out of room I made up pasta sauce and froze them individually in tubs of various shapes and sizes - I used the last of the sauce at the the weekend =- so its not quite lasted a year but its been brilliant and good moneysaving as DD is a pasta monster

(Sorry if I'm asking silly questions!)

    Thanks lovely:A

I hope that any of that helps - just keep prompting me for answers I'm teaching a 'veggie gardening' course up here with someone - so I'm loving getting back involved with this rather than my own 'research'.

No such thing as a silly question - just an unanswered one!!:D

And, as I'm only in debt because of singleparentness and getting back into study and choosing to study flowers for a billion years (OK only about 10 years) - at least you make me feel useful!!xxx

PS Sorry if I've gone on - people don't ask me at home about flowers anymore unless they run away quickly!

  • Good morning everyone, sorry to hear its gone back to winter for some of you!!! this weather is a nightmare, it would be so llovely if we had sunshine all year round!!!

Well done to you all on your listing!! Good luck with your selling!!!!!!!

Determined - thanks for your reply last night, I need to find out how much they will contribute just as piece of mind, as to be honest the paperwork sent through to me is just general and doesnt have much information on it. I will have to look at my payslip. My OH advised me to get the pension as he has one and we need to think about the future thanks to the government but my only worry is the monthly outgoing and paying my debts off!! But hey I will need to sell sell sell on ebay and be really tight!!!

Will need to keep reducing where I can. Am waiting for a response from my loan company with regards to the ppi, they are investigating apparently. am starting to get anxious now.

Will also be reducing mobile phone contract when its due for renewal as its really high and I dont need the current package.

Need to get the food shopping down - I also am thinking about growing some salad/veg/fruit but have not got a clue about growing it let alone anything to do with gardening.

    Well my list for today:

    - Work hard!!!
    - List 3 items on ebay
    - iron 3 items
    - check online banking
    - check paypal account
    - meals from stores
    - make list of all the odd jobs I need to do so they are down on paper and i can refer to that when i get an energy burst
    - wait patiently for payday!

hope you all have a fantastic day!!!
  • oh my god i have just seen an advert for wonga.com - you can borrow money off of them, get it within an hour, up to a £1000 and the apr is over 2000% - yes over 2000% - you did read right!!!!
