Gizmodo and Engadget, both respectable sites, have photos and video of the new iPhone 4G, apparently 'found' in a bar in San Francisco. Disassembly and extensive examination has confirmed it to be genuine.

Of course, with Apple's notorious security, the chances of this being an accidental leak are virtually nil - no way would any staff member be allowed to take a working prototype off-site, let alone accidentally leave it in a bar frequented by tech journalists.

All indicators point to this being a deliberate spoiler leak, designed to put off people who were thinking of buying the Droid Incredible or Evo 4G, which have received rave reviews in the media and are an order of magnitude more powerful than the outdated iPhone 3GS hardware. Apple want people to know an updated iPhone is on the way so that they will hold off on their purchases and wait to see what the new iPhone has to offer.
What's new
• Front-facing video chat camera
• Improved regular back-camera (the lens is quite noticeably larger than the iPhone 3GS)
• Camera flash
• Micro-SIM instead of standard SIM (like the iPad)
• Improved display. It's unclear if it's the 960x460 display thrown around before—it certainly looks like it, with the "Connect to iTunes" screen displaying much higher resolution than on a 3GS.
• What looks to be a secondary mic for noise cancellation, at the top, next to the headphone jack
• Split buttons for volume
• Power, mute, and volume buttons are all metallic

What's changed
• The back is entirely flat, made of either glass (more likely) or ceramic or shiny plastic in order for the cell signal to poke through. Tapping on the back makes a more hollow and higher pitched sound compared to tapping on the glass on the front/screen, but that could just be the orientation of components inside making for a different sound
• An aluminum border going completely around the outside
• Slightly smaller screen than the 3GS (but seemingly higher resolution)
• Everything is more squared off
• 3 grams heavier
• 16% Larger battery
• Internals components are shrunken, miniaturized and reduced to make room for the larger battery

I think it looks a lot better than the current iPhone. Be interesting to see if that's what it really is going to look like.

As I've ordered a Desire today I don't think i'll be getting one though!

I think it looks worse than the old iPhone but maybe I'll grow to like it. I didn't like the new iMac when it first came out but now I love it.

Definitely agree with you that there is no way Apple would have let such a leak happen. No way would it have been allowed off site.

strange cause the pictures I've seen of the supposedly new iphone has it made out of aluminium just like the MacBook Pro.

    as in this link

If you find yourself in a fair fight, then you have failed to plan properly

I've only ever been wrong once! and that was when I thought I was wrong but I was right

They were proved to be photoshopped fake pictures.

If you look at the second image down the Apple wording is at the wrong angle.

Yep, the Daily Mail photos were shown to be fake. The Gizmodo ones are the real deal.

The last I heard was the first 4G was still in trials in one of the Nordic countries; I think it's far too early to be pushing this technology. An enormous number of global users are still with a 2G network, including a large number in the UK.
Try saying "I have under-a-pound in my wallet" and listen to people react!

Is the iPhone 4G actually designed to use a 4g network though. I thought it was just the 4th generation iPhone?

4G is going live in parts of the US at the moment. HTC are releasing the Evo 4g this summer to take advantage of it.

I considered the iPhone for a 2nd time last month when I renewed my contract; but until the camera is at least 8mpx there's just no way I would buy one.
Happy with my advice? The please use the 'thanks' button vvvvvvvvvvvvv

Why? The number of Mega Pixels is less important than the quality of the optics. A 3 MegaPixel camera with auto focus, a flash and good optics will produce better pictures than a fixed focus 8 Mega Pixel camera with no flash and poor quality lens.
