How long does ryanair have to offer an alternative flight

Having been due to fly to Spain on Saturday. Ryanair want me to claim a refund or rebook a flight at four times the amount originally paid.
As I understand the position they have to honour the original contract and offer me an alternative flight to the same destination at the same price.
My question is how long after flights recommnce do they have to offer me an alternative
as it is impossible to contact Ryanair either via the 10p a minute or £1 phone lines

From what I have seen posted in other threads, when Ryanair send you an email cancelling the flight there is a link to claim a refund or rebook and if you rebook (using the link) the flighs starts of with a price but this is reduced to zero by the time you get to the 'pay' screen.
