I purchased second hand an Acer Aspire 1597 Laptop for £150-00 from Cash Generater.

On returning it home I found the laptop had not been
1) health checked
nor
2) cleared of all data from the previous owner'

Later I was informed this should havee been done,

Especially as it was loaded with a large amount of

'Hard Core Gay !!!!!!' personal photos....
BankAccount details were also available to see.

Insteard of returning it under the 7 days no quibble guarentee, I didnt, Main Reason being I had begun to upload my own pics, etc and thought id remove myself rather than have to remove all of mine..

The next problem that arose was when I tried to connect to the internet I couldn't. I have spent hours trying to solve why. Checked settings the lot

I spoke with the assistant on a couple of occations within the Guarentee period, he gave me further instructions to try...

The lady assistantas means of a Goodwill Gesture sent it for repair to the 'repair store' it says on the receipt she gave me??
On return she informed me the 'Fault was with the Hard drive' ? and as my *3 MONTH GUARENTEE (website states 6) had now expired' Nothing more could be done and handed the bloody thing back to me?
Oh she also felt the need to add that the person who looked at it had now left and my job was convienently his last...right !!

The fact it was sold unfit for the purpose etc was not even taken into consideration.

Next step to contact shop lease manager...tbc
NatWest won charges back :D
WFTC overpayment, I could of challenged it....tut
Axa Bonus cashbuilder froze 2 accounts not receiving interest :(

CAB or trading Standards will advise you on your rights

I do really think you should have taken it back to the store earlier

You bought it from Cash Generators, not an IT shop.

They take in any old garbage people get shot of to get a bit of cash to satisfy their addiction/ repay their payday loans etc.

You cannot expect them to know anything about the laptop from a technical perspective, the pictures and data should have been ignored or even laughed at.

Not being able to connect tothe internet, has nothing to do with the hard drive. If the hard drive is goosed, the thing wouldn't be working.

Take it to a local IT shop and get them to look at it for you (warn them about the content though!!!)

Sounds like you got what you paid for.
  • I'm just shocked that someone sold a computer to Cash Generators without deleting their personal data first!
See if you can get a repair shop to have a look at it and tell you what's actually wrong and how much it would cost to fix: you'll be lucky if you can find anyone who'll diagnose the problem for free though, but if they can confirm it was faulty when purchased you might have a stronger case. Also, check what's printed on your receipt re warranty period. If it says 3 months then I'm not sure the fact that their website says something different would make any difference: presumably you didn't check the website at the exact time of purchase?
  • They probably didn't delete their personal data because it wasn't theirs - it was the personal data of the person they'd nicked the computer from to get them a couple of bags of half and half for speedballing.

Try contacting their Head Office in view of the disparity in guarantee period.

Other than that, never buy from a legal fence/junkie cash supplier place again.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

So you tried to benefit from SOME of the previous owner's (probably unlicensed) data?

The harddrive won't have any relation to the internet, so that's not the problem.

Thanks for all posts, in reply
No I didnt keep the files, I deleted them ALL including bank details,
    luckily for them..

I did visit the shop within the guarenteed period on 2 occations and they gave me further instructions to try.

I wont be purchasing again from these stores and only due to my own finacial circumstances that I did.

I got what I paid for? I didnt realise a typwriter cost £150 nowadays. They sold it as a Wireless Laptop so shouldnt the 'Unfit for the purpose it was sold for' Act come into this?

An assistant informed me that a Health check should of been carried out and Data cleared before selling on.
This now make me wonder if it was stolen and the shop wanted rid quickley?

The programmes in hindsight may of already been installed for all I new, when the original owners bought new. I can only presume as I am no Techie...
