The particular coving I have taken to is:

    Supercove Lightweight

However, I cannot find any pre-cut mitre ends of the same brand / type ... is it okay to use the following pack:

    Artex Simply Classic

The dimensions of the Artex are: 13cm Depth and 34cm Length whilst the Supercove just says Diameter 115mm and 105mm Depth.

    Is this compatible?

    Cheers!

Probably not 105mm to 130mm - ask instore for the corresponding corners - while your in there pick up the COVING mitre block I was telling you about it comes with a sleeve around it that shows you reallly and I mean really easy step by step ways to do it - have a look and then only you can decide whether or not your confident enough to do it.
    All the best P

Plastering over artex on ceiling and window wall, papering and decorating and coving - This is the lightweight coving with the paper lining on it - doesnt look any different to plaster coving

    PS Lightweight is also cheaper

Plasterer - do you know roughly how much it would cost to get a professional to supply and fit this lightweigh coving? Our living room is approximately 8mx3m. I'm looking to get all rooms in my house done, and OH hasn't really got a clue on the DIY front.

How many rooms do you have? As long as you don't live in Edingurgh castle and your house is average size it should take a pro plasterer/decorator (both these trades equally proficeint for this work) no longer than a day or day/half - so, don't pay them a metre rate it'll cost you a fortune pay them a day rate - not sure in Scotland but round here expect to pay £150-£200 per day plus materials.

Thanks Plasterer. We've got 5 rooms needing done, well one is a tiny box room. That sort of price doesn't look too bad, will certainly look into it. Thanks

  • Also thinking about doing some coving myself....though would want a more intricate style than the simple quater circle.

Does anyone know any good suppliers of lightweight coving in different styles? Examples?
  • I have had some lightweight coving fitted by a “professional” and I am not happy with the joins where 2 sections are butted together. Would it be possible to depress the area of the joint, apply filler and rub down - with out damaging the paper covering?

Alternatively, is removal an option? I can see that it is likely to damage the wall and ceiling but I just want the finish to be as good as the plaster coving I put up myself.

    Any thoughts?
  • what you want to do is cut the four mitres on a small piece of coving, and use them to match up and work out what you need to cut. sounds stupid, but ive been plastering years and i still cut the wrong mitre!! as what you cut on the floor, is the other way up in the air, if it sounds complicated, its not, when you start you wiil see.

So get a 1 foot piece of coving cut a 3 and 4 ( internal left and right ) and write 3 and 4 and top and bottom on it, and then do the same for external. then you can use it to match up.

What you will find is that the mitre block is for perfect 45 degree angles, so if your walls are out then a 3 wont fit a 4 perfectly, so you can use the bit you have cut to show you need a little bit more cut off the top of the mitre, so on and so on.....

Also clean it off after every piece, as it starts going off once you have stuck it up.

I know this thread is an old one, but for the polystyrene coving I have one of these and cut it with my best kitchen knife(carefully;)), haven't got one wrong yet.
