  • Oh great - I must have another 3000 to get this year then. The slug pe;;ets seem to be doing their job at the moment though especially on the pots of Asiatic Lilys which have always been a firm favourite.

go to the local fields and look for slow worms under stones, take them home and let them loose on the slimy beasts, they will soon bring the population down.

Love the idea of deep heat :T

    Good Luck

Aha, slowworms eh: this might be the problem, the cats and chickens all LOVE slowworms and get lots of them. I guess my slugs are benefiting from this lack of predation. :(

Lotus eater, I agree with everything you said, and didn't mean to sound dismissive of your wonderful advice, but its just our slug problem needs something more than I can throw at it.

ive mostly had pots of things, as opposed to growing straight into the ground, but one thing that I found work was ground coffee beans.
as to be quite coarsely ground, say cafetiere ground stuff.

I used to work in a coffee shop, so could bring plenty home with me, and ive also asked at some local places, and one manager kept some in an ice cream tub for me which I collected a couple of days later.

I just laid it over the top soil, about .5cm deep. I've watched them try, and they dont seem to like crawling over it. Think its the sharpness.....

Ive just been to the woods today , where the council men were chopping trees down that had been damaged ,
ive scooped up 2 bags of wood chippings and have laid them round the bases of my plants along with some slug pellets for good measure .
    Very MSE !!

I make a circle of 1p and 2p pieces around the stems of the plants that the slugs particularly go for-seems to work well in my slug infested garden.

Great ideas but I don't want to kill them.I collect as many as I can and take them across the road to a field.I have been told they will return, hey ho.I must have the thickest birds in the country as when I release the slugs they scarper before a bird gets near them.Has anyone got a humane way to deal with slugs?

You could always set up a slug sanctuary and advertise in the Daily Mollusc - Free massage and pampering.

Just remember to set up many miles from your home! :rotfl:

Ha ha Frangipan -I have pondered that.....they may suppose someone put them there for some really deep, spiritual reason, when in fact its just to deter our slimy friends...

    Lol
I am already running a cat sanctuary (well 2 ferals and my next door neighbours 2).Now if I could only teach them to like slugs. It would save me a fortune .I know I am stupid but I just can't bring myself to kill them( the slugs not the cats.).Fine gardener I am, cats and slugs everywhere and I haven't even mentioned the mice:rotfl:
