Rust is the major problems with these. Any major suspension problems should have been sorted at the MOTs but often they just get advisories.

Check the brake pipes as these rust.

The sills and other bits of bodywork can rust badly

The engine should be very reliable but they can burn oil when they get to high milleages. With regular oil changes though they are as good as any engine and the head gaskets rarely go on these. It is also a pushrod engine with a very short chain so there is no issues with regard to this either.

Try and find an example with no more than two previous owners and full service history. Avoid anything with very low miles as the engine would have never been warmed up to temperature.

The gearbox and clutch rarely gives problems. If you find a Ka which is solid then they should be a very cheap car to run. Buy a neglected example with a lot of previous owners and it will be constantly be in the garage.

What are you up to OP? You keep asking all these slightly unusual and apparently unconnected questions! Writing some kind of article or something?

I always thought the L was for Luxury (lol :) )

I'm sure in the olden days, the escorts were something like

    Base models were simply 1.3

Then the Luxury 1.3L ( e.g rev counter, auto windows)

Then the 1.3LX (as Luxury but also Alloy wheels and colour coded bumpers)

Top ofthe Range 1.3 GHIA (all the above plus headrests and stuff)
