Lift Sharing...

I wonder if anybody has told you that you are talking b****x.All ABI motor insurers have agreed that if your passengers contribute towards your running costs your insurance cover will not be affected, as long as lifts are given in a vehicle seating eight passengers or less. This agreement does not apply if you make a profit from payments received or if carrying passengers is your business." (Source: ABI website, 2008)
Very good - you've posted the insurance companies view on this which isn't actually the law and completely irrelevent to what I posted.
Care to try again with something a bit more relevant?0 -

You are wrong.
What is your next great advice on this subject, are you going to tell us that it invalidates your insurance0 -
I wonder if anyone has informed the people taking part that if they accept any monies, even if its just a token payment towards petrol, that they need a Private Hire plate and everything that goes along with that?
What utter nonsense you talk man!
You can accept payment as long as you are not making a profit/using it as a business. I should know, was a taxi driver for 20 years so am well aware of the legalities!0 -

So what is the law?
If the car is taxed, mot'd & insured... it can't get much more relevent can it?Always try to be at least half the person your dog thinks you are!0 -

Also says on the OP's link the following:
'We suggest that drivers and passengers share the cost of petrol. Please note that drivers should not make a profit from sharing a car as in most countries this can invalidate their insurance and tax. If you have any concerns please contact your insurance company directly.'
Good site OP, thanks!0 -

You wanted law?(4) For the purposes of this section a journey made by a vehicle in the course of which one or more passengers are carried at separate fares shall not be treated as made in the course of a business of carrying passengers if—
(a) the fare or aggregate of the fares paid in respect of the journey does not exceed the amount of the running costs of the vehicle for the journey; and
(b) the arrangements for the payment of fares by the passenger or passengers so carried were made before the journey began;
and for the purposes of paragraph (a) above the running costs of a vehicle for a journey shall be taken to include an appropriate amount in respect of depreciation and general wear.
Read the rest of the act yourself but this is the relevant bit that underpins the the insurers decision. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Bringing the thread back to what it was originally intended for, I saw a new lift sharing website launched in the UK a few weeks ago.... rideshare.co.uk
It's the English version of Europe's largest lift sharing portal. However as it has not been around for so long it might not have that many lifts in the UK yet, but having a quick look at it I think it might become quite popular here. Especially since you can search for lifts without needed to sign up first.
Oh and @Hammyman.... Dumb-!!!0 -
I tried with many car share websites in the past. They just don't work.
Even if your passenger starts his/her work as same time of you, there's no guarantee that both of you finish at same time.
The cost of one-off bus/train fare (compared against monthly ticket) becomes prohibitive even if the journey is missed (or some starts/finish early one day).Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.0 -
I get the impression that rideshare.co.uk is more set up for less frequent longer distance journeys, and not so much for commuting. It says it has over 1.3 million users across Europe, so something must be working at least. Only time will tell whether it works over here too or not though. Might be interesting for students or music enthusiasts.0
