gas oven... good or bad?

When cooking my finger food for my moving in night i was shocked to see that i have a gas oven and hob - (gas mark what?!)

I had assumed my oven would be electric (my own fault)

So are these good or bad?

Am i going to be paying out a lot more in the way of gas (which, ive heard, is the most expensive fuel?)

Or would an electric oven be better?

Electricity is roughly three times more expensive than gas when equated, so it will probably cost you less (unless it's a range/AGA/etc. compared to a conventional oven). :)

Gas is cheaper, but I prefer cooking with electric, it's a more even heat, the stuff at the top of gas oven tends to be cooked a bit quicker, so take that into account.

The range is about the same as an ordinary oven, so go about 2/3rds up for most cooking.

There's probalby gas mark numbers on most of the stuff you'll be cooking anyway.

We have a combi micro oven, it's fantastic, might be worth looking into getting one if you hate the gas oven so much.

Gas hobs are much better than eelctric ones, so enjoy that!:)

Electric hobs seem quite rare in new properties these days as they are a sod to use. I had one in my old flat and would NEVER buy a flat without a gas hob/gas connection.

Gas ovens are a different matter. I don't see many gas ovens less than about 30 years old - my granny used to have one complete with a high level gas grill, but definitely a rarity!

Ive used a gas oven before, never again though. Electric fan (mine I can switch the fan oven off if I want to which is good) and gas hob all the way :)

I much prefer gas ovens - I've bought one a few years ago so I assure you they are still available! Its cheaper. It heats up to the correct temperature in a couple of minutes - I hate preheating the oven for 15 minutes before you can cook anything. There is quite a variation of temperature from top to bottom but the plus point is you can cook things needing different temperatures in the same oven - or if you don't like that then get a fan assisted gas oven that makes the temperature much more even. Personally, I can't see why anyone would buy an electric oven.

I have a new(ish) gas oven, too, bought a couple of years ago. Conventional electric hobs are next to useless (far too slow to respond) and I find a oven just as good to use as an electric - maybe better. As someone else said, prepared food always gives gas mark cooking figures as well as degrees and so do cookery books. You'll soon get used to it!
