Nope. Scandinavian pine is one used. We don't use the hart wood, all our timber is machined from the side boards.

Yes. I have heard a couple of people say they will last 30 years plus if maintained.

Have you come across American Pine?

Leveller - Yes I would agree. The quality of timber has dropped. We have our material run at off side boards, and pressure treated. My work place has been manufacturing/trading Sash Windows only for 22 years.
( Not got the detail to hand of spec, but will look into that tomorrow when at work )

I also agree that if a good decorator paints them with quality paint, four years would be significant.

But, there's so many cowboys advertising that they are Sash and Case Window Specialists, painters, decorators etc...that don't take time to properly prepare their windows, or do a good high spec job painting them.
Two years advice keeps you on top of it. Preventing any decay etc.

Scaffold would not be needed if the windows were fitted with Easy clean hinge on the bottom Sash, and The Edinburgh Hinge on the top Sash, it's possible to do your painting without scaffolding.

Spend on the spec of your windows to start with, hinges. Or spend on the scaffolding.

  • Hi any carpenter worth his salt would not recommend softwood for a durability window, they only last 10-15 years even vac vac treatment is not all its owned upto.
Spending hardearned cash on just the difference between cost on timber between a softwood and a good quality sapele on any window is just false economy in the long run, i own my own workshop and been making windows victorian and edwardian for many a year, (using low grade softwood you are throwing your money away) but what if you could get softwood that was reclaimed from 100 yrs ago,now im sure that would last, well seasoned that would be.
Now i refuse to make windows out of crap basically yep my windows last and come all finished just slot into place, and wait for it i can get reclaimed softwood timber from a source that when you machine it you can smell the 100 yr old sap yum yum lol, quality old timber cant beat it,please dont ask for the source though i refuse lol.

Alderleybowden. That would mean 80% of our trade joiner customers who buy the high spec redwood in and around Edinburgh, Fife and the Lothians, are not worth their salt. The customer gets what the customer asks for. The trade customers must be offering prices in the redwood, to their own customers and we can't make our trade customers buy something they don't want.

You refuse to make windows from certain woods ? Then IMHO you obviously do not manufacture as your prime business to trade customers. You can not tell your trade customers what they can and can not purchase!

As the apparant manufacturer, then you will know that hardwood retail prices should only cost 20/30% more than redwood. And I say apparant because of the above paragraph and from my experience, quite a fair few companies advertising as Sash Case Specialists, don't actually have a workshop, and advertise they do and buy from us.

I've worked at the manufacturers for two years, and not once have I been on here hustling, when someone posts a topic stating they've been quoted 10K plus. Most joiners on here who have a problem with my posts regarding the prices and manufacture, are hustling for work at ridiculous prices. Buy hey, my work place does not have joiners staff wages to pay out, doesn't really have to advertise anywhere and is a one man workman. Overheads are low.

Are you telling me you can get 8 x 2 batton, reclaimed, no nails delivered in truck loads and order as much as you want ? I don't think so. You can't.
