Good router suggestion

I
It was suggested that my 'new' pc didn't like the 'old' router.
This would be most earnestly suggested by anyone who works on commission and has just sold you a new computer.
The trusty old Netgear DG834 modem router remains a reliable buy. Secondhand, they're very cheap on eBay, nowadays; so, you could afford to experiment without any great financial risk or outlay.
It's handy to have a spare modem router, anyway: it enables you to disprove to your ISP that any outage which occurs "must be a fault with your equipment, sir."
Don't laugh at banana republics. :rotfl:
As a result of how you voted in the last three General Elections,
you'd now be better off living in one.

Go into the router interface now, and again when it fails.

When I lose the connection, then I cannot access anything on the internet, including the link you provided.0 -
That's part of the diagnosis. That address is not the internet, it's your router.
So your pc is not talking to the router, do an ipconfig /all from the command prompt when it fails, tracert www.google.com
Just double check that that is your router ip now
start, run, cmd
ipconfig /all
look for the gateway address.!!

That link is not to the internet, it is to the router interface itself-so you are unable to even connect to your router? No free lunch, and no free laptop

Suggest you check the ethernet patch cable leading from your PC to the router. Do the ends look to be in good condition? Do they snap in firmly at each socket when you plug them in?When I lose the connection, then I cannot access anything on the internet, including the link you provided.
Suggest you try a new patch cable. (This is the cheapest change you can make...)0 -

the link he provided isn't on the internet its the local address of your router!
do you have a second PC/laptop/wifi mobile phone you can connect? it'd be interesting to see if both lose connection at the same time or not?0 -
No I don't have a spare machine.
Also I am not a techie person.
How do I check the router is working properly? - Step by step please
And no the blue ethernet cable doesn't click in nicely to the box...0 -

macman wrote:If you want a new router, PlusNet should give you one for £6.99 which is the courier cost-the routers are free to new customrs. So you should get one as long as you are OOC. Just ask.
Update - I noticed the router was slightly damaged where the ethernet cable connects.
I contacted Plusnet about them sending me a new router as suggested (tried a different ethernet cable already, and no better) and the advice I was given was to leave the router on permanently - as in 24/7 - even when my PC is turned off.
I am slightly concerned that even after a few hours the adaptor was quite hot and I worry that leaving it plugged in permanently is a fire risk. Was his advice sound, or should I just change the modem?0 -
leaving a router on 24/7 is the best way to run them. It has benefits for your connection (if you keep turning on & off it can reduce your speed - there's obviously more to it than that, but I'm trying to keep it simple), and especially if you have a suspected fault, leaving it on will allow your ISP to monitor your line with their diagnostic tools.
p.s. rather than trying to access your router via the link posted above, try typing it into your address bar direct, then add the page to your browser Favourites for future use.......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple
