Good router suggestion

Hi, I am with Plusnet for broadband, and since buying a new pc, I occasionally lose the internet connection which only returns after I restart the machine and switch the router off.

A friend has suggested I try a new router - so any suggestions on a reliable one please.

I use an ethernet cable and don't use wireless at all.

Many thanks for any suggestions (I am not a techie person).

I doubt it's the router, have you logged into the router interface to see if the adsl connection is down when this happens, or is it the link between the pc and the router that is failing, usually an os problem. Post more details about the operating system, the router, and the symptom

This is a known problem with some Belkins - I have episodes when this drives me mad. It seems the connection drops for a very short time but the router cannot reconnect when the connection is up again. It takes several resets of all the kit and often a factory reset and a couple of cups of coffee before all is OK again.

Draytek routers (dreadful name) seem to win reliability and quality prizes in the mags and will be the next make I try.

I wouldn't know how to log into a router interface.

It was suggested that my 'new' pc didn't like the 'old' router.

Anyway I am using XP and use Firefox as my browser and am with Plusnet which supplied me with a D-Link (DSL-320B) box.

Custardy, thanks for the link - my particular problem isn't covered by the 'troubleshooting' section of it though.

HC25036, is it the Vigor 120 I require? If so where would you recommend I obtain one from?

I suggest diagnosing the problem before spending money on something that may not resolve it.

Go into the router interface now, and again when it fails.

Sorry but this is complete nonsense. Any modern PC will work with any ADSL router. If your router is set up correctly for Plusnet then it should work. The PC dropping the connection is not indicative of any router fault.
If you want a new router, PlusNet should give you one for £6.99 which is the courier cost-the routers are free to new customrs. So you should get one as long as you are OOC. Just ask.
However this will not necessarily correct your problem.

So what do I do once I log in?

on the status screen, it should say whether your router is connected to the net.

    status.jpg

If you can get to this screen when it isn't working, it rules out a pc-router connection problem

Also make sure idle timeout is set to zero

Been away.... Agree with the others to check first that what you have is a router-PC problem. Since the router is sent out by Plusnet you would assume that it works for them. Only replace if it drives you mad with not reconnecting properly like the Belkin did with me.

I don't have ADSL so not sure about router specs - any that says it is for ADSL should be OK, but check with the seller first.
