Flipping Volcano!

  • I totally agree with the whole safety thing. If anything was to go wrong with a flight that would be it and the consequences to air travel much more cautious.

I think it is great they are allowing planes to fly over at high altitude it shows things are loosening up a bit and the ash is not as bad.

I think all of us that are due to fly in the next couple of months is make sure there is a contingency plan (ie can rebook honeymoon etc) and watch the volcano and wind direction with baited breath. I dont fancy driving to Scotland for my wedding, but it is my plan B now xxxx

TBH, I would prefer to not fly if there is any chance that the silica in the ash formed glass in any / all engines causing them to stop so the plane falls out of the sky.

For me its a no brainer, as was OH's 36-hour roadtrip home from Copenhagen to Blackpool via Brussels.

And I agree with Gandy's comment about the altitude - it's relatively safe if you are above the ash cloud, but not if you have to fly through or into it.
  • Calm acceptence has desended on me. What will be will be.

I am scared of take off and landings at the best of times (Shhh don't tell anyone I always end up crying and OH arm goes black and blue!) so if there is any chance of danger there is NO WAY you will get me up in the sky. I've never let my fear stop me going anywhere, but this would be a step too far...

they can fly over because they've reached altitude above the ash cloud before they've entered UK airspace.

the reason UK airspace is affected is that the planes leaving have to go through the ash cloud before they get to crusing altitude therefore have a risk of things going wrong.

i know this is a pain the butt for everyone (my OH parents were supposed to be visiting last weekend and we had to cancel everything and spent a very frustrating friday trying to get any information from easyjet as the flight wasn't showing on the flight checker page) but they're only making sure that no flights and therefore no passengers are at risk
It's just the UK CAA, Like for example, why Dublin is open and not Belfast, and why Amsterdam and every other...Also 2 Sky Service from Canada Landed in Manchester this morning, allbeit with no passengers...

It's UK Burocracy or however you spell it...
The BA Pilots are holding right now...with one over the isle of man asking about waiting and to not go to shannon, lots more around france holding but were pushing to land already
  • British Airspace now open - YAY!!!!!
