Florida but not Orlando

Hello!
I have some family in Florida I'd like to visit this summer. It must be in late July or August, but I don't mind when exactly.
Their nearest airport is Fort Myers, but flights there return from London are working out at about £1100! (edit: actually have just found one on delta for £698 but involves a 12 hour stopover!)
Realistically I can fly into most Florida airports and then drive across should they be cheaper.
Does anyone have an opinion as to the best way to get the cheapest deal? Is it worth booking some kind of package and then just ignoring the hotel so to get a cheap(er) flight.

Atlanta is one of the cheaper gateways into that area of the US. I have driven from Atlanta to Tampa and it wasn't a bad drive. You could either stop over in Tampa and then continue to Fort Myers the next day or do it all in one go.The Summer Holiday of a Lifetime0
