Problems with new phone and reissued number.

I bought a new phone yesterday on Tesco Mobile. I got a text from someone called Chris. So I text back asking which Chris (as you do when you don't know which Chris). It worked out that we don't know each other, but he started calling me over and over.

It turns out the number I'm on now is the number of his friends (alleged) stolen phone, and I have had call after call tonight from many different people shouting at me, threatening me, sending texts etc because they think I've bought the stolen phone off someone. (I'm not bothered about the threats and stuff, it's just annoying because it's a new phone and I shouldn't have to deal with it).

I've been blocking the numbers as they come in using the reject list on my phone but they keep ringing on different numbers.

My main question is should I have been reissued a number from a phone that is (as far as we believe them) stolen this soon?

Also, what do you think I should ask Tesco to do about this? Obviously I want a new number but do you think I should be entitled to have my credit transferred onto the new card? It would be annoying as on their deal you pay £10 and you get £20 free credit. I don't know wether they will say I'm not entitled to the free credit to be transferred. I just need some advice as I want to ring them tomorrow and get this sorted as soon as possible really.

You could have a recycled number. Telephone numbers are reused in the telephone industry in general after being put into 'quarantine' for a period of time.

Tesco should give you a new SIM card.

Numbers are 'supposed' to be put in quarantine for 6 months before being available for reissue. That doesn't mean that at the 6 month point they do get reused just that they appear on the system, some aren't reused for years.
It sounds like Tesco have a very small pool of allocated numbers so there coming up far too fast....

As above, get on to CS and they'll change the number for free for you.
