I also agree with the comments re Linux.
Many of these older laptops (and desktops) seem to have a BIOS date (too old) which for some reason will not allow an install of Debian variants, certainly for the ordinary user.
Many, many thanks for all the help and replies - DD has returned the laptop and has decided to look for a more up to date one -fortunately no money had been involved so this has been notched up as a learning experience!
