declutter now or after the move?

I've been under offer for a month now. things are moving along. I've started to think about the moving process.

Does it make sense to move all of our stuff to the new place and then sort through it to get rid of stuff we dont need. Or should i do that as i'm packing?

sorry- a bit of a silly question really. Those of you who have moved before- what did you do? :D

Declutter now, no point humping it all across to the new house.

Freecycle, carboots and the tip are your friend.
  • We are about to sell and emptied out the loft last weekend and I was absolutely ruthless and ing ended up getting rid of 12 bin bag fuls of stuff I had been keeping for no reason, also 5 bags of clothes to charity
Get rid of it now, no point in paying removal van to fill it with rubbish

Definitely de-clutter now, the sooner you start the better, as otherwise when you move you will be so busy it will be harder to sort it all, and if paying for removals you will just be paying to move stuff you don't want/need; you never know you could even sell some of the stuff to help pay towards some of your moving costs, or even the take-aways you will probably be getting in the first few days after moving (if you are anything like me!!)

I have moved twice in the last year, and de-cluttered both times, and have even done so again since I moved here 6 months ago!

    Good luck with it!

I agree with everyone else, having recently moved, decluttering and having a good sort out before is the best way. No point in taking it all with you and the pain of having more boxes to unpack than you need.

You will be way too busy with your new house to think of decluttering, will end up leaving it in boxes and leaving it cluttered!

Agree with everyone else. I did a major declutter before moving in with my boyfriend, he decided to leave it till after. Its been six months and his junk is still sitting in boxes in the spare room. I think he assumed I'd do it for him once it was taking up my space too!

Why waste your energy carrying stuff you don't want to a new place?
  • Before of course !! why take boxes of rubbish with you !!!!

Also declutter your food cupboards / fridge / freezer - someone I know took box fulls of the bottles of mayonnaise, salad dressings etc with about 1 teaspoon (if that) in each bottle - I laffed my head off !!!

Removal companies usually charge for volume so why pay to move stuff that you are going to get rid of anyway? Declutter now :)
  • thanks everyone- an overwhelming declutter now methinks! We already got rid of a lot of stuff for all the viewings etc- though the draws and cupboards are full of cr*p.

would you do it literally as you were packing stuff up or now?- If i go through all the draws etc in advance i'll just have to put the stuff we are keeping back until actual packing time- so would be doing it twice (if that makes sense!)
