Just joined the forum.
Interesting reading. I was looking at the possibility of buying a HD camcorder from the States. Price (including 100 dollars shipping) came to £331.
Questions is: Is that the total cost>
Will it work fine over here, apart from of course a plug adaptor?
Many thanks0 -
dont live anywhere near the east mids do you?I go to the US pretty much every week and don't come back with masses of shopping each time to be honest. Although we complain about rip-off Britain there are few things that are cheaper - most things, when you take sales tax (don't forget that US sticker prices in shops don't include local sales tax which varies state to state from around 5% to 9%) and import tax (that's if you declare what you have bought - any goods total over the value of £145 must be declared - you will pay around 22% import duty on most things) into account prices are broadly similar.
However, things that I do buy regularly:
* Make-up - always have a Clinique shopping list - it's dollars for pounds, sometimes better than that
* Clothes - a pair of Levi 501s for instance can be had for $40 in Sears
* Nintendo DS games and PSP games (not films) - not region locked - currently going for $29.99 in most stores
Remember, most PC parts and software are the same price or cheaper online in the UK. Playstation, Wii and XBox (I think) games are region locked. Camera bits are cheaper online in the UK. Some toys are cheaper, but tend to be too bulky to carry home. CDs are usually $15 or so - cheaper online from CD-WOW or the like. DVDs are around $18 - region coded and often cheaper in the sales in the UK.
There are other bargains to be had - but you need to remember that not everything is - if you go knowing the UK price then you can't go wrong, and you won't end up carting stuff back accross the pond unnecessarily...
Have fun!

Many package forwarding charge yearly fees. Here is a company which charges just per package or mail forwarded. Low fee of $8.50 per package. http://www.shipito.com0

Hi - I've done a lot of searching with no luck so sorry if this has been covered. I have been buying a few things on-line from the States with reasonable shipping costs but then I come across some US companies who will either not ship to UK or charge a fortune ... why is this. Many thanks Roger0

My post seems to have ended up in a thread other than the one I replied to. Just ignore please
My OH did this once.
That's how we found out about,
Excise duty,
VAT
handling fees all to be added before you find that ....
.... the sizes listed on the US web site were not correct conversions so the dratted things didn't even fit!
Ended up giving away as a nice present.
Still apart from that, no worries.0 -
I know people probably think about this a lot, as the dollar is weak and stuff costs a lot less over there, is there a way to shop there, spend on an english card and it does the convertion for you then you pay to get it sent here? A company prehaps that does this for you or the such like? Clothes shopping is obviously what i am looking for and colognes too.
Thanks for any help.0
