There are savings - if I can get a list together I guess a jaunt out there to wave at the funny Americans with good old english pounds can be justified...

    On my list:
    UK
    US

    COST SAVES
    Asics GT2130 running shoes ---£77
    $95 (FOOTLOCKER)
    £46 ----£34
    6 Technical books
    £200
    $210
    £100 £100
    Nintendo Wii
    £154
    $255
    £125 £39
    =========--
    £431
    £271 -saves-£170 ish

Dunno what else to add really - what are the other good deals out there other than books and dvds (which are dollar for pound)?

Problem with buying the wii is that its region locked, so you will only be able to play us games on it

In July (when the new Harry Potter book was released) I purchased the Harry Potter 'talking book' on cd from Walmart and had it sent to my 11 yr old neice for her birthday. I don't remember how much it was now but I know it was about half the price of here in UK.

I'm now trying to think what I can order to have sent to her in California. I think it might be a Walmart, Target or J C Penny's gift card but what a lazy opt out on my part!

Shame the Canadian dollar has kept it's value as we need to send gifts to my husband's family too.

Yeah - its region locked, but the US titles are 70% of the Jap releases the uk titles are 40% of that and come out 1.5 years later. The net compatablilty is the main worry for me - but he US releases are also half the price of the uk ones....
so says another ordinary mug fighting the 1% who own the political machine grinding them down from on high...

How do you get Dell to send a laptop to the UK? IT won't let you order one on their USA website to be sent to the UK :(

As far as I know Dell will not send a laptop from the US to the UK. There are a number of ways around this though.

If you are visiting the US one way around this is to order the goods to be delivered to you in the US and bring them home with you.

If you are not visiting you will need a US address to have the goods delivered to. This can be provided by signing up at https://www.borderlinx.com You then have the goods sent on to you by borderlinx. Full details of costs can be found on their website.

Some things to remember though. VAT and tax may be charged when you bring the goods into the UK so check on how much this will be.

Secondly, in the case of a laptop check that Dell will honour any warranty and how you go about claiming on it. Also remember the keyboard is different on a US laptop to the one we use here. This doesn't present a major problem but you'll have to get used to it.

    Regards,
    Arthur.

You have the option to change the keyboard settings to UK in the same manner that we have the option to change the settings to US. This is done in the "Control Panel" of your pc. Unless of course you are actually saying that they keys are physically in different places (I have never actually seen a US keyboard) that would obviously be a seperate issue and like suggested, one that you would "Get used to".

Yes, some keys are in a different position. For example, the @ key is on the top row. Also you won't find a £ key so if you need this character you will have to use the character map. The differences are not major and I get used to them very quickly when using a US keyboard.

it depends on what you're interested in. Best take a list of what you would like and know the cost of the items back here in the UK.

Also remember that officially you are only allowed to bring back £145 worth of goods duty free. You also get the standard allowance of tobacco, spirits and perfume in addition to this limit.
