I think it's terrible how much tax we have to pay on imports and how low the threshold is for duty/VAT. I recently sent a set of books to my niece in Australia (via Amazon US, which was cheaper) and it was interesting to note that Australians are allowed to 'import' up to $1,000 AUS worth of goods (about £415) before paying any other charges at all. It seems to me that in this day and age people should be able to shop from abroad without being penalised quite so harshly.

well spotted, and yet another rip off. Think of it though the only reason is a gain of income, and there isnt any logic to our £18 bracket. Its a joke.
Save saynoto0870.com in your favorites, and stop giving companies more £££ dialling 0870 numbers when you can dial freephones or cheaper alternatives
call your credit card company, tell them that you want to leave, 99% of the time theyll lower your APR%

If any girls are going to New York, I'd recommend the Aveda shop. ..........The prices are in pounds over here what they are in dollars over there (ie their stuff is half price!), great service and a free cup of tea!! I'd recommend buying the huge bottles as they'll last a lifetime!

Guy's can use Aveda too you know ;) :rotfl: On the subject of Aveda does anyone know of a US supplier that will ship to UK?

    Thanks :male:

Don't forget to add on the £8 handling fee per item the Royal Mail now charge if you have an item which requires duty to be paid!! This is completely scandalous and I think someone (not me :D) should start a petition! Even FedEx 'only' charges £4-odd!

    Hi everyone,

I was reading the first and last pages of this great post, but was not able to find what are the best option to purchase region 1 dvds from the US (under £18 because of customs). Can anyone recommend any honest website? Sorry if I'm duplicating questions.

One more thing,: the £18 limit is before postage and shipping?

    Thanks.

For R2 DVDs and CDs go to: http://www.find-dvd.co.uk
They're much cheaper than Play.com and trawl a number of outlets. They also have a R3 option as well.

    For R3 I always look at: http://www.deepdiscount.com
great selection and once more cheaper than play.com. They also deliver to the UK free on orders over $25.

The £18 limit (approx $35 at current exchange rates) is exclusive of postage and packing.

    Regards,
    Art.

DVD Pacific are good, I usually run a region 1 search at https://www.dvdpricecheck.co.uk first though as prices do vary.

Example a search for High School Musical shows Amazon and DVD paciific tied at £8.25 inc postage.

The £18 limit is INCLUDING postage i think

    Hi.

I have just bought 3 pairs of croc shoes and even including the postage they worked out at less than half price. I bought them from
http://www.taylorsshoes.com. They were delivered in less than 1 week and i didnt have to pay any customs duty etc so well pleased.

The £18 limit is excluding postage and packing. The VAT man would not know the cost of the latter to arrive at a figure.

    regards,
