contact lenses are a bargain in the US - particularly the websites. Was paying £23 per month for toricmonthly disposables, just bought 2 years worth for £50 from oneof their websites. Absolutely astonishing price difference!
What if your eyes get better or worse in the next 2 years though?0 -
Has anyone brought any watches from the U.S? I really like the Tag Monaco and here it is £2,100 I have found it online at $1500 roughly £800 quite a saving, any ideas on what the duty would be and any trusted websites?0

If any girls are going to New York, I'd recommend the Aveda shop. It's on one of the main Avenues (running north to south), Maddison I think. Between where the cheaper shops are and where they start getting expensive. The prices are in pounds over here what they are in dollars over there (ie their stuff is half price!), great service and a free cup of tea!! I'd recommend buying the huge bottles as they'll last a lifetime! :rolleyes:0

You can always tell when your case has been opened as they are obliged to put a form in the case advising you. It explains your rights should you think anything has been removed or damaged.

Twice I have been to the US and had my suitcases forced open. And once there was no note inside. The first time they were really careful and left a note, the second time everything was a mess. And the suitcase was ruined! So I'd definitely advise NOT locking your luggage unless either you get one of these special locks that security can unlock, or you're prepared to replace it. Walmart do cheap luggage if this is the case.0 -
Update on the designer specs post:
http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?p=4925748#post4925748
I received my glasses from the US and they're great. A letter came through from Parcel Force to tell me to pay the duty online and then they were delivered. The specs cost me £101 including postage, and the customs duty was £42.45 (considering VAT is 17.5% I worked out the other fees on glasses must be approx 25%) so a total cost of 143.45! Nearly a £50 saving on the UK price for the frames. However, parcel force added a £13.50 handling fee thus cutting my saving so beware of this! I now need to get lenses fitted and there's loads of places online that do cheap efficient reglazing services.
I suppose its a bit of a long process but worth it for the money saving aspect!

Hi, but do UK high street opticians accept blank frames you bought elsewhere to fill in your lens prescriptions/ Which ones?TheBaldwins wrote: »If you want some specific designer glasses it's worth checking the US sites. I just ordered new Kio Yamato glasses from the US. The frames here in teh UK were £190 but I got them in the US for approx £90. Shipping was $20 (£10). I'll have to get the lenses put in once I get them but I'd have to do the same if I bought the same ones here.

I've checked the government site and it looks like it's the usual 17.5% VAT and something like 5% duty. Even if it was 50% duty it still works out cheaper. Just remember to try them on in a shop here first and then get the frame number from the inside of the arm.0 -
Does anyone know if Windows XP bought in the States would operate ok on a pc here? & if I arranged for it to be sent to a friend in Ontario & then posted on what I might be liable for in Tax etc?
And does anyone known good sources of components like motherboards that can be mailed to the UK?0 -

The padlock that allows American customs to open your case is a TSA padlock. I got mine off Ebay last year when I flew out to New York with my daughter. Always a good idea - they then have no excuse to wreck your suitcase! What is this life if, full of care, we have no time to stand and stare0
