Anyone know when the import duty allowance is being increased?
Seem to remember that values for gifts was being doubled? So ebay purchases marked under £72 would potentially escape import duty/VAT.
Is this not being implemented till April though?0 -

The allowance is being increased in April but it is the personal allowance that you can bring back through UK Customs with you when you return from abroad.
As far as I know goods sent by mail still have a limit of £18 brfore duty has to be paid.

I'm never going to remember that name. The web page looks a lot like Ebay.“A budget is telling your money where to go instead of wondering where it went.” - Dave Ramsey0

No sign yet of the increased allowance!
And note that Parcelforce's minimum admin fee for clearing dutiable packages has gone up to £8 from £4. It's not well publicised on their website but it's there.0 -
As everyone points out, one of the problems with ordering from the States is the VAT charged (and import duty if applicable). I was under the impression that you only had to pay these on the value of the goods plus the shipping *within* the UK.
To give you an example, I once ordered some boots from the US and when they arrived by DHL I got a slip saying I owed some large amount in VAT. I called DHL to say I would be happy to pay it but first they had to tell me how much of the shipping charge was for the part from the port to my house and how much was for getting it to the UK. Unsurprisingly, they never called back.
Can anyone confirm the exact rules on this?

You can get some real bargains at https://www.ae.com (kind of like GAP)
They are having a buy one get one half price on tshirts and a few other things.
I bought some stuff last year and got stung for VAT plus £8, cos i went over £18, this time using a code, i got the prices down to this.
Name: AE Bootcut Jean
Price: $16.96
Name: AE Sun Faded T
Price: $4.23
Name: AE Booty T
Price: $8.46
P&P was $25
You may find other codes for free shipping, but they dont work on international orders. There are discount codes that work however and they are here.

I haven't read every post so this may have already been put up but a website i use regularly for DVD's is
https://www.dvdpricesearch.com
It's a comparrison website that checks most major DVD outlets in US. If you set your preferences to 'UK shipping' before you search it will find the cheapest option inc postage to UK.
It also has a price conversion tool which uses Yahoo finance to convert from $ to £ so you know exactly how much you are paying at that days exchange rate.
Have bought many DVD's for under £6 inc postage
Platoon
The Good The Bad And The Ugly
Fist Full Of Dollars
A Few Dollars More
It's A Wonderful Life
Excalibur
To name but a few.
Currently
Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (Collector's Edition) Best Deal is $29.87 which equates to £14.88 inc p&p
The Last King Of Scotland (Widescreen) Best Deal $23.79 which equates to £11.84 inc p&p
Enter The Dragon (BLU-RAY) Best Deal $23.24 which equates to £11.56 inc p&p0
