Backdated Price Rise? EDF

I received a letter yesterday 7/8 from EDF telling me they were increasing their prices from 31 July. So for 1 week I have unknowingly been using electricity at a higher rate. This is in effect a back-dated price hike.

Are they allowed to do this?

    I think your find they can .Probaly hidden in their T&C.
    Other suppliers have done this sort of thing before.

    They done the same to me (see earlier post)
    Had the cheek to charge me double as i had the incorrect meter. No other supplier bothered. Now they have gone to the expense of changing it, im off!

    Yup it's in T&C they can increase there prices at anytime - and not to be funny - but like have you been completely oblivious to the news reports. The Beeb knew about the price rise before half the employees

    So you must have been aware they were going to increase prices on the 31/7/2006 .

    They haven't back dated the price rise at all.

    The price rise is in effect from 31/7, and they notified you on 7/8/06.

    What is the problem?

    You agreed to the contract terms when you signed up.

    Obviously this allowed them to put up their prices, and they did agree to inform you within 10 days of doing so (which they have).

    If you don't like the new prices you don't have to pay them at all (which you would know about if you bothered to read the contract).

    Just go and sign up with a cheaper supplier then write and tell EDF you don't want to pay at the new rate and have signed up elsewhere.

    You will pay EDF at the old rate until your new company takes over.

    Act now if you want to do this (there is a time limit to do this of 14 days from them telling you there's been an increase) - it is more practical than moaning on here because you were unaware prices had gone up!

    I had the same problem with Powergen (last year). They wrote to me, letter dated "August", telling me about a July price rise. I wrote back saying that I rejected their price rise as I had not been informed, and therefore had not had the option to source alternative suppliers.

    They replied, saying that they would freeze my price for another month or so. I switched suppliers. (It was the last straw in a succession of incompetence.)

    I don't know if they are "allowed" to do it, but I wasn't having any of it. :D Incidentally, trying to switch from Powergen was like removing leeches. They took it upon themselves to cancel the switch without any authorisation, as they thought it was a mistake. Yeah, right. :rolleyes:
    If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

    You're so right.

    Someone should have just posted a simple 3 letter answer to your simple question - "Yes", then the thread could have been closed off.

    Instead people took the trouble to both answer your simple question and show you how you need not pay the increased rates to EDF.

    We'll know better next time.

    exactly right i have had the same with EDF but have found they are still the cheapest so i just didnt say anything
