Increasing the amount of light in my kitchen velux/suntunnel

Hi

i get fed up with having a dark kitchen

I have brightened it cosmetically with light coloured units, light walls & new spot lights. however i crave natural light.

the problem i have is only having patio doors which are set back 2m from the main room so that area is light but the kitchen units are around the corner from the doors.
This area where the doors are has a sloped roof & a beam to seperate it from the main kitchen

I am considering roof lights & pitching the roof.

However if i did this would the light be blocked by the beam?

Or maybe a sun tunnel would be more succesful?

how much light do they bring in? what sort of cost?

    Or try these: http://www.solatube.co.uk/.

We haven't decided whether to fit a electrically operated Velux window or to go for a 'sun tube'. Has anyone got any opinions on either???

I have a sun tube at the top of my stairs as we blocked off the landing light when we built an extension.

It is OK and it is like having a lightbulb on.

Given the option I would go for the velux window as it will let more light in.
  • Thanks for the info :) I've got 3 people to call to get quotes for a velux

    anyone got a rough idea?

Will I need planning permission? & building regs?

  • Highly unlikely to need planning permission for a velux as they're not normally regarded as development. If you have any restrictive conditions on previous planning permissions, preventing the insertion of any further windows, then you would need planning permission, but again - that's unlikely on a single storey roof.
