Social Housing and Adequate Space

Hi, I've looked throught the forums and can't seem to find what i'm looking for so thought i'd ask you guys if anyone knows what is legally classed as adequate space in social housing. Myself husband and 3 children lost our house and after being on the waiting list for 2 1/2 years was offered the house we are currently in. Circumstances meant we were in need of social housing so 'beggars can't be choosers' sprung to mind when we accepted it. We have been here 2 years now and as our eldest has moved from toddler to single bed have found that the small bedroom is too small to fit a single size bed (its 48sq2 not inc radiator bulkhead or door opening area) the 2nd bedroom is 10x6f with a cupboard where the boiler was so cannot fit 2 single beds except bunkbeds. There is only one room downstairs and a kitchen that is 6x5 so we even have the dryer in the hall. My question is can this be classed as a 3 bedrrom as contact with the housing as been fruitless has they said 7 people can live in the property before it is classed as overcrowding any thoughts ??
Thanks

What's wrong with bunk beds? Lots of people with mortgages couldn't afford to have kids bedrooms any bigger than yours so I don't see why you would be any different.

Why would you need to if there are 3 bedrooms in total?

  • the 3rd 'bedroom' isnt big enough to fit a single bed in therefore I assume the OP needs a space where 3 singles for the 3 children fit into one room.

Where did the OP say that?

They didn't refer to that as the 3rd bedroom, and assuming 1 wall is at least 6 ft long 48square feet Should be plenty big enough for a single bed (which is usually 6ft by 3ft). I still can't see the problem.

Move the adults into the second bedroom. A double bed would fit in that room easily. Then you can put two or even bunks + a single in the main bedroom.

  • My assumption is that when the OP refered to the 'small bedroom' its the 3rd bedroom with the 2nd being 10ft x6ft and the main bedroom being theirs. Of course this would need to be varified by the OP.

I wouldnt assume though that 1 wall of the small bedroom is 6ft long as a few houses Ive viewed when recenly buying had the third bedroom with dimansions like 5ft8 x 5ft, therefore too small for a standard bed.
