I've just been on the BBC election site (excellent site by the way), and checked lots of differing parties approach to the same issues. On many occasions UKIP and BNP have striking similar policies. UKIP seem to offer many of the more paletable policies of the BNP without the darker side .... an acceptable harder line party ....?????

Rubbish. UKIP is, in fact, the repository of Conservatism (note the capital 'C') - waiting until the boy wonder, Call me Dave, falls from grace.
Comparisons between the libertarian-leaning UKIP and the nationalist socialist BNP are the stuff of Charlie Wheelan's dreams.0 -
The only "similarity" is withdrawal from the EU, something supported by half of all Labour and Conservative voters.0

That is why people draw reference.
I think people get confused between being racist (like the BNP) and being anti-immigration (like UKIP) because many people who are against immigration are racist.
I find it interesting how many immigrants are anti-immigration, speaking as an immigrant who doesn't have very strong views on the subject.0 -

Interesting thought. How do you categories people who are racist with those that are anti-immigration? Most posters I've seen who advocate reduced/no immigration are usually automatically branded racist within a few replies to their post...0 -
UKIP should merge with the Monster Raving Loony Party. The UK owes many hundreds of billions of pounds and yet UKIP want to INCREASE the defence budget by 40%. That's just what you need when you're bankrupt; a few more wars. :wall: What a bunch of raving loonies0

It's hard.
As I say, most people who are anti-immigration are really racist despite their protestations in many cases. However, I used to work with a Mauritian Chinese bloke who was definitely not racist, or at least he drew his friendships from a very wide ethnic circle.
He was very anti immigration as he believed (in the manner of Enoch Powell) that mass immigration led to tensions with the people already living in the country. He moved to the UK when he was 2 years old from memory and so the UK was all he knew really and seemed very happy to be living in London and working in banking. He considered himself to be wholly British with non-British parents.0 -
I'm not anti immigration totally but would support much lower limits and restrictions.
I do not hold, like Gen's Mauritian Chinese acquaintance that tensions are inevitable with mass immigration: it would depend entirely on the resources available. My friends to are drawn from different cultures, countries and races, and I am married to someone of a different background. Someone's colour doesn't define to me how much they are part of this country now, or even their place of birth, rather the way they live. My friendships and romantic liaisons have been cross cultural, not by design but by circumstance and because I see no barrier in that. I myself am a cultural mixed breed and have lived in many different places, some where I stood out, some where I didn't.
As some one who experienced physically violent racism as a child, not in this country, I feel proud to live in a country which is rich in culture and broadly accepting and curious. I do not feel like a racist, and were we a country of a different size then my views on what the ''limits would be best being'' would alter too.
edit: never the less I will not be voting for UKIP.0 -
Hang on a second.
Labour are far more racist than even the BNP. The difference is that labour have been allowed to use their policies of employment on basis of race, while the BNP have (and hopefully never will) any real power.
Black/asian only shortlists? If that isnt racist, what is!0
