new computer wants to connect to internet but no internet

Just been helping a friend set up a new computer for his business. The computer will not be connected to the internet and never will be, it is to run his business and accounts.

So why does it come with a load of software that must be updated over the internet?

It kept complaining that it could not get virus updates, windows updates, you name it it, kept complaining.

We ended up wiping it clean and installing a clean new version of Windows 7 and it still complains.

Plus it moans about not having the drivers for his sound card. Not needing sound.

Luckily the software he needs for his business does not need an internet connection.

Why does Microsoft assume that every computer is connected to the internet and that Windows 7 needs to be updated all the time?

And for all the other junk pre-installed:mad:
He was quite happily running his business on Windows XP :juntil his CRT monitor packed up

Rant over

Why did he not just replace the monitor?

The main reason why updates are needed is because criminals keep finding new ways to break Windows, and this won't stop any time soon. The reason that the updates are done over the Internet is because that is the only cost-effective way to do it.

If he really is never going to update any of his software, please warn him about using USB pebdrives, external HDDs, floppy disks and CD/DVD's from other syatems on the PC, as all of these can potentially infect his machine. Without an up-to-date AV program, he will be vulnerable to any of these.

Adding to the post above. You should not have been helping him as you do not know what you are doing. There was no need to wipe the computer. You could have just told the software to stop looking for updates.

He decided to get a new computer, OK!

If he ever wants all the rubbish back on his computer he has the restore disk.

Who says I don't know what I am doing?

This was a rant about rubbish on a new computer not asking for useless advice from people who don't know any better.

I think I will give up on this place, from what I have seen it is peopled by little cliques who if you don't spell properly, mistype the occasional word you get slagged off.

You have a rant and get insulted, you try to help people and they never
    give the information requested and
    need I go on

    In fact I am gone

  • I wonder how the OP's friend will be able to run his business without the essential accounting package updates that come through every 6 - 12 months on average?

And what was wrong with switching off automatic updates?

Windows is pretty much (and has always been) 90% cråpware, anyway - a few industry standards surrounded by stuff that never quite works the way it should in theory.

Actually, thinking about it for a millisecond more -

    I don't care.

Just another 'I hate you all' poster. They're usually back in a few days under another username doing the same again.

It was made pretty obvious from your first post and your rant.

There was no need to wipe it clean and re-install windows when a few simple procedures would have stopped the requests for updates and with a little customising it could have been set up for their requirements.

computer manufacturers bundle a lot of crapware with new machines these days, i often find it better to wipe it & reinstall windows as some programs can make a mess of the system when uninstalled.
