Does anyone know if its a safe area or full of youths hanging around.

Landport is not a good area at all really.
I would personally look 'off' island in some nicer areas.
CC debt at 8/7/13 - £12,186.17
Barclaycard £11,027.58
Halifax £1,158.59
5 year plan to live unsecured debt free and move home0 -
Acceptable areas on the island are Old Portsmouth / Gun Wharf area that's it.
Look off the island, Farlington is ok, Cosham and Paulsgrove are not!
I live in Fareham.
What's your budget roughly, and other criteria?.....0 -
lots of boats?0

Portsmouth is a great place to live but has a bad reputation. Landport is not the best area but it is not too bad and convenient for the city centre. I have lived in both Portsmouth and Southampton and there is not much to choose between them from a 'roughnest' point of view.
Southampton has more shops, if you like that kind of thing, and Portsmouth has more things to do - like Southsea seafront, historic ships, museums etc. Portsmouth seems to have made more of itself over the past 15 years whereas Southampton has built West Quay and that's it.
Overall Portsmouth is actually a better place to live - and (something that Southampton people will keep secret) Pompey people have higher incomes than those of Southampton on average.0 -
I have lived in Portsmouth for about 8 years now.
There are a few nice places, but a lot of crapholes.
Buckland, Somerstown, Paulsgrove and Leigh Park I wouldn't touch with a bargepole
Southsea is nice, as is Old Portsmouth and Eastney. Gunwharf is OK if you're quite young/rich/both as it can be quite noisy. Port Solent is good if you have a boat, but is a little bit soulless. I think Porchester is OK and Fareham is nice too.
As for Landport. It's a little bit grotty, but it is close to the centre which is handy for shops, trains etc.0 -
I have lived in the Portsmouth area for about 10 years now but not actually in Portsmouth, started living just outside in Emsworth which is lovely. About 6 years ago moved just outside to Havant, on the boarders for Emsworth.
I have the benefit of being both close to Portsmouth and Chichester without the problems of living in Leigh Park or Paulsgrove!Love is all around! :rotfl:
:T £2 savers - £6 30/4/06 :T

I can see Crasswell Street from my office window, so am pretty familiar with the area.
Are you looking at buying or renting? If so I can check it out if you give me (pm) the address / postcode.
Area can be rough - like any City Centre - but it's full of students & lots of people/families live here quite happily and safely. :j:D:beer::eek::A:p:rotfl::cool::):(:T0 -
I'm originally from Hilsea and still have relatives living in the city. Hilsea is okay, some roads there are considered "Highly Desirable" in Estate Agent speak. Landport is one of those areas, might be alright (depending on your neighbours) but could be dreadful. My gran lived for years in a high rise jsut off Greetham Street, and to be fair it was lovely, great views and quiet if you are well above street level. Creswell street, isn't that the one with Tesco's at one end?0

A lot of people seem to be down on Paulsgrove and Leigh Park... They are nowhere near as bad as they were 25 years ago. I am old enough to remember them in the late seventies / early eighties.
Some parts are are alright or actually (dare I say it?) quite nice. Try comparing them to parts of London or the other really big cities. Then you will see what real rough is!0 -
I know Crasswell Street sometimes has it's problems, but I don't know enough about it to be certain for you. I worked on it briefly a few years back, but not really been there since.
Just in the process of selling our home in West Leigh, which is a rather nice area (completely unbiased view, honest!)0
