Oh I see, what you need to be a good manager is to know all about Management Theory, forget about experience, communication, leadership etc.....

I am not saying these qualities are not important, far from it but I would bet that yourself, freinds and family members have all had a " manager " that had none of the aforesaid skills or qualifications.

There is no doubt in my mind, that there are thousands of managers in the U.K today who could not " lace the boots " of many of their subordinates.

How did that type of " manager " get to where they are? Luck, nepotism and ars* licking perhaps?

Are you suggesting a spotty graduate just out of nappies with a degree in business management is what management is all about? No way!
Experience and knowledge are the qualifications that a manager needs.
I am not a manager, but have worked for many over the last 35 years.
I have to say that the standard of management today is going down year on year, even if the so called qualification requirement is supposedly going up!!!!!
I would guess I am not alone with these thoughts. A lot of the so called highly educated managers could'nt manage a school Tuck Shop.

My point exactly. Too many people a promoted to management for the wrong reasons. A blend of skills, qualifications, experience and knowledge should be the requirement. Not lenghth of service, nepotism or ars* licking!

Go and start yourselves a thread and leave the OP to get an answer that actually helps - I am happy to advise the OP based on my experience and qualifications, and discuss your issues in a separate thread - and yes I am a Manager.

    Not good enough I'm afraid.

My employers, job title and pay packet tell me otherwise. But I suppose you know better....

You are making assumptions here. You don't know what my qualifications are. I think what you say is Cr*p regardless of where I am at.

    Hi Indie.

If the meeting was formal, then he should formally have told you of the grievance so that you can comment on it.

If it was informal, then how can you be informally told off for doing something or saying something when you don't know what it is you have said?

You need to learn a new tactic of not responding unless you know what it is you are accused of.

    ie

'Have you ever threatened someone at work?'
    'How do you mean, threaten?'
    or
'In what context, threaten - I don't know what you mean'.

    That sort of approach.

'If you aren't specific in your question, how can I be specific in my response?'.

That will be an order then?

And as a manager, you WILL be right as usual!
