Is Freeview HD dependant on the hardware or software of the receiver?

I have an AverMedia 808 USB receiver which I use to watch freeview TV on my computer.

So would it need an upgrade to the software to receive Freeview HD or is it the hardware that determines whether I receive HD or not?

And HD Transmission as well :p

You won't get Freeview HD unless you have the right hardware AND it is being transmitted in your area, which won't be for quite a while for most people.

    And HD Transmission as well

Well, I am supposed to be getting HD transmissions in August.

I thought that all the dongle did was capture the signal and feed it into the computer where the software took over.

This digital TV lark is a lot more complicated than I thought:eek:.

How are us poor old pensioners supposed to cope with this new fangled digital TV:eek:.

At least I am getting the hang of all the things I can do when posting on here:rotfl:

  • Listen Folks,
My last message to you about the Freeview HD and how you can receive it on your usb dongle.

Firstly you must check the Freeview website freeview (.co.uk) and then type in your post code. Your main transmitter will then be displayed or its closest relay to you. The website will tell you whether the transmitter is transmitting/broadcasting Freeview HD. Freeview HD is DVB-T2 or "T2". T2 is also encoded using MPEG-4. MPEG is Motion Picture Expert Group. Digital Multiplex B is used for HD. Presently, you can only get BBC-HD, ITV1-HD, Channel 4's 4HD. Five was having some technical problems with their HD channel Five HD.

DVB-T is Digital Video Broadcasting - Terrestrial. There are others as well:

DVB-S/DVB-S2 where the "S" is for satellite; DVB-C/DVB-C2 where the "C" is for cable; DVB-H is for "Handheld" smartphones; DVB-IP is "Internet Protocol" is for broadband portals, etc.

If want to get Freeview HD onto your netbook or laptop then follow these instructions. It's dead easy guys to set this up, but your transmitter needs to be transmitting Multiplex B on which Freeview HD channels on available from:

    1)AVerTV Volar Black HD A850

Smart blue light display for signal detector, HDTV H.264 / MPEG-2 Freeview "Standard Definition" Live TV Ready. This device is "HD Ready". This device can only decode HD signals when another device such as a Freeview HD set top box is connected to the A850's aerial socket.
Recording Videos in H.264 - MPEG4 - Format and Playing on iPod and PSP
Eco-friendly design – Low power consumption
High gain antenna – specially designed for laptop use
Stylish casing design to perfectly match your digital lifestyle.

    2) Freeview HD set top box with Freeview HD or T2 label on it.

    3) Take a co-axial feed from the aerial to the set top box aerial in.
    4) Take a co-axial feed from the aerial out of the set top box to your A850.
    5) Take the USB cable supplied with the A850 and connect it to your laptop.
    6) Tune the set top box in first and tune the A850 in using the supplied software.
    7) You can also use a usb video capture device capable of handling HD - HD Ready in other words.

This is the only way you'll get Freeview HD onto your laptop. The other is HDStar satellite receiver from tvstick (.co.uk)
