iPhone Questions

Hi all,

I've got my heart set on getting an iPhone. I am currently with T-Mobile on a rather good contract for £20 per month (50% discount) and I am due a renewal in August.

Obviously with iPhone contracts being a fair amount more than £20 a month I'm a bit hesitant to switch.

I was thinking I could buy an iPhone 3G outright now and stick my T-Mobile SIM card in it. When renewal is up in August, upgrade to the latest all singing all dancing phone on offer and sell it to cover the cost of what I paid for the iPhone?

Where am I best looking at buying an iPhone outright?

Thanks

if you are thinking about an iphone, i would strongly suggest getting the 3gs, as there is rumours going round that there is a new iphone due, and also rumours doing the rounds that when the new iphone hits the shelves, apple will stop all support for the older 3g model

Here is the bit i read it from -There are currently three versions of the iPhone available – the basic 3G model and the enhanced 3GS models (16GB and 32GB) which come with a faster 600Mhz processor, more memory and an improved 3-megapixel camera with video capability. Bear in mind too that a fourth model is rumoured to hit shops this summer – and the rumours that Apple may then withdraw support for the original 3G model.

and here is the link to the whole article

Don't buy anything until after June when the new model will (probably) be released as the prices of old handsets will fall. The 3G is already almost two years old and will not be getting the full range of functions with the next software release. Do you have a data package on your current contract? If not you will not be able to use all the functions of the iPhone without incurring hefty charges.

The cheapest iPhone contracts are £15 a month (SIM only) or £20 a month (pay for at least half of the handset on top). I am with Tesco - paid £320 for the 16GB handset then £20 a month for a year, reducing to £15 a month SIM only in year two. If I get a modest amount of cashback for switching to 02, the average monthly cost over 24 months will be £27 and I can then sell the handset for, say £100. :money:

Actually with Apple it 's not usually quite that simple.

(Using the Apple shop for prices here for simplicity and avoid the subsidy's changing costs)

Currently there are 3 Iphones on sale.

    3G - £343
    3GS 16GB - £449
    3GS 32GB - £549

What I predict we'll actually see is the 3G will be removed (not discounted to clear stocks, just simply be removed, probably go back for warranty replacement stock)

    Prices post 4G being launched

    3GS 16GB - £349
    3GS 32GB - £449
    4G ??GB - £549

    I guess there may be a £499 and £549 version (say 32GB and 64GB)

Long and short is done; don't expect Apple kit to be discounted, Apple don't do discounting, they are a poremium brand, and any dicounting or sale events cheapen the brand.

I'm in a similar situation. I have a t-mobile contract which gives me unlimited internet for £5 a month. There's not a huge amount of minutes & texts but it's enough for me. I'm buying a 16gb 3GS payg iphone from o2 who will unlock it for £15 and sticking my t-mobile sim card in. So quite a big upfront cost but I've cancelled a credit card I don't use very much and taken out a new 12 month interest free on purchases one so it's going to be cheaper in the long run.
I did consider waiting until the new 4g was out in the hope that prices would drop but most people on Apple forums don't think there's going to be much of a price drop.
I know there's second hand mobiles on places like ebay but I don't fancy taking a risk on such a big purchase so I'll be getting mine as soon as the new credit card is here:D
Of course once the t-mobile contract is up (not for over a year yet) I'll be free to shop around for a new tarrif as I'll have an unlocked phone.
Oh I'll be selling my present phone to pay for part of the iphone.

I have a data package on my t-mobile contract along with plenty of texts and minutes for my money.

I am kinda swaying towards waiting for the new iPhone to come out as I'll be kicking myself if the 3Gs drops to the same price as the current 3G.

If T-Mobile offer me a decent upgrade like the HTC Desire, I can easily cover the cost of the iPhone. Desires seem to be going upwards of £350 on ebay.
