My cat's died

I found out this morning for definate (had an idea about it) that my kitten has been run over and died. We want to bury her in the garden under an apple tree she used to climb all the time, I've never buried a pet before, is there anything I must be sure to do?

Also I need a way to commemerate her (not a cross)

    ((((((hugs)))))).

I'm sorry to hear about your kitten.

What about a nice rose bush (or other plant) to remember her by.

I have seen people with little plaques in their flower beds - not sure where you buy them from though.

Lost a much loved cat of 20yrs a few months ago and we buried her under a tree at the bottom of the garden... you must bury her deep enough that other animals cannot dig her up.... we wrapped her in her blanket , silly I know but it made me feel better that she was comfy.

We put pebbles to mark her grave and planted some seasonal bulbs that come up at different times of the year , I also found a nice pic of her that I intend to get enlarged and framed as a long lasting memory......

One of my parents old cats is now pushing up the daffodils, and the other pushes up the snowdrops.

    I know how you feel

I walked in the other week and found my cat dead

We still do not know the reason why - except it looked like he had been licking his legs (no blood) - neighbour then said they'd use some lawn grower, so it may have been that

We have now buried him in the back garden too, but it was very upsetting and shocked at the time

I'm really sorry to hear about your kitten - it's horrible to lose a pet, even if you haven't had them very long. I think just by burying your kitten under the apple tree sounds like a nice memorial as you said that your reason for doing that was because she used to climb it all the time. That sounds lovely.

    All the best.

And it looks like we made it once again
Yes it looks like we made it to the end

Thanks for all your replies, don't know how the kids are taking it yet DS1 is quite sensitive but DS2 has ASD so we'll have to see ...
Last time a cat died I'd spent ages explaining what was going to happen and what the vet was going to do, knew it hadn't worked when DS2 took one look at the cat after she'd had the injection and said matter of factly 'are you sure she's not dead?'

The stones and plant sound nice and maybe a plaque with her name on the tree.

How about a small garden ornament of a kitten even better if you could get one that looked a little bit like her????

someone might be able to help - my other cat is acting very weird in a lost sort of way. To be honest they didn't get on very well, but now she is not eating too well and has been pulling her fur out - I think she saw him dead . any ideas on what i can do?
  • having lost 8 cats over the years i know how heartbreaking it can be
i would say involve your kids as much as you are able -5 of ours are buried in our present garden all in boxes wrapped in blankets with their favourite toys/things our kids have put a little snack in with them for the journey and written notes to them we have always held a goodbye and the kids have thrown the first lot of soil over them before Dad finishes the burial. The other thing we do is let the cat "lie in State" overnight obviously this is not always possible but it always helped us, everyone was able to say what they wanted and get used to the fact that tiddles had died. I know it may seem over the top to some but it is comfort to us and it does teach younger ones about the circle of life and all that. the following verse is also reassuring for the young (and old)

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
