I cannot believe what a fricking school boy error I think I have made.
I have had the drive hooked to the desktop via a USB caddy and not directly into the SATA port on the motherboard.

Now, I "think" this may have had something to do with it.

I will run the test as above, and see what happens. However, I suspect the SATA drivers are there, it is simply me being a complete yogurt

Link is at the bottom (download section)

Your need to burn it to CD, without a Floppy drive the only way I know of adding drivers is by creating an custom WinXP Installer CD which can be a pain, so maybe save that for the last option!

Okay download the DiagCD23.exe from above, and it "should" create a CD for you (your need a blank CD and a CD-writer), boot it up on the Bell and run both tests (note I haven't used that CD I have my own tools), run the checks (as prompted) and then hopfully any issues will be fixed,
now boot from the XP setup disc and run the fixmbr and fixboot, then exit
if you have a recovery/repair disc that came with the PC i would suggest trying that first or if you have a repair/recovery partition try that (that's the one that may prompt to you press F11 at the start), if not then boot from XP setup disc and install as normal BUT delete ALL partitions on the driver your have problems with and then create a single partition (but if you have a partition called "recovery" then stop and reboot and look for a prompt on start up
