Hi
I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice.
I recently became aware that I have a CCJ against my name, which I am now trying to sort out, and deal with asap. I found this out by getting a credit report.
In the past when I was an undergrad student living away from home AND in a different country from all my family, I was stupid enough to build up debt to live/survive off in order to complete my studies. Not being entieled to any student loans, or fee payment grants etc, I built up a debt of roughtly £17,000 over my four years of study. A necessary expense for my education and career I feel.
I now have a succesful seven year career as a professioanl registered social worker and was wondering if this CCJ will cause me problems going forward in my career? The CCJ was for bad debt, ie financial reasons. Not for any criminal matter or convinction etc. Will this be problematic and now cause me to lose my career?
In addition, I was recently thinking about going back to college to retrain as a legal excutive or solicitor. I guess that is now out the question, as they totally frown upon CCJs, even if satisfied? Is this right?
Since I left Uni I've tried to be so careful with debt, AND now have entered into a informal debt management plan (not an IVA) with a company to get things sorted. It's going well so far.
Can anyone offer me any advice.
Thanks. It would be most welcome.

We have just started to pull our heads out of the sand and realise that we are struggling with our debts. We have credit card debts of around £25k, two loans for around £20k, our mortgage and a secured loan of £40k.
We have always managed to keep up with our payments with lots of juggling but this month has been a real struggle and some payments have been missed. Therefore we have slipped one month into arrears with the two cards and one loan.
I work part time and my income is taken up with the mortgage.
My husband is self employed and so his income is very up and down. I am worried about how we can sort out some sort of DMP when we do not know exactly what we have coming in each month until it actually comes in - some months can be pretty good and other months can be almost non existent.
I am intending on ringing CCCS at the end of the week when I am not at work - what sort of information should I have handy.0 -
Dear DFW Forum,
I am currently in a DMP with the CCCS which my husband and I have been paying into since 2002. Since then we have had 2 children (last one in October 2009) and acculumated 3 catalogues, 2 payday loans and husband has a seperate payament arrangement on a car he wrote off. I now find myself ina position that I cannot keep up with even the minimum payment and was comtemplating going into an IVA. I have noticed your forum suggests an IVA as a last resort and I was afraid the CCCS would cancel my plan with them if I tell them about the additional debt I have incurred. Could someone advise as I don't want to go to an IVA 'hard sell' company without looking at all the options. I have read the IVA guidance leaflet which has now managed to scare me to death..... But I don;t want to get to the stage where bailiffs are knocking on my door or worse: I lose my house. Please help!!!0 -
Hi everyone. Just a quick question, ive recently been in touch with PayPlan and they turned me down for a DMP because my surplus income was too low (£102), i just wanted to know if this would be the same with CCCS or whether bankruptcy really is my only option?
Hi bayley84 and thank you for your post.
It’s difficult to say whether a DMP would be your best option without knowing the details of your situation. We would only recommend a DMP if your debts were repayable within a realistic period of time.
If you would like us to look at your situation to see which debt solution is best for you, you can either use our online debt advice tool, Debt Remedy or call our helpline free on 0800 138 1111. Lines are open Monday to Friday 08:00-20:00.

Hi bluelewis and thank you for your post.
We advise that you switch accounts as soon as possible and make token payments to the overdraft until the start of your DMP. However, I’d recommend that you contact Payplan as they may advise you differently depending on your situation and when your DMP is due to start.

Hi there and thank you for your post.
It looks as though you must have transferred a credit card balance from another card to your ASDA card and this is the fee. I’d recommend that you query this with ASDA, especially if you weren’t expecting the fee.

Hi D and thank you for your post.
It’s unlikely that a CCJ will affect your current job but I’d recommend that you check the terms and conditions of your employment to be sure.
A CCJ may affect your potential legal career, although you could put your case forward by explaining how you got into financial difficulties and that you have taken steps to repay the debts in full. The CCJ would not affect you in the same way that bankruptcy would and some employers may not even ask the question once it has dropped off your credit file.
Hope this helps.
