Searching around some older web pages they suggest Yahoo and Microsoft used to place non-commercial sites in Web directories for free. However, if I press on the link it just directs to a registry system where everyone seems to pay. Does everyone have to pay them nowadays?

There is only a differential between adult and non-adult website nowadays if you follow this link throughAnyone can use Standard submission to submit for free to a non-commercial category. You'll know the category is non-commercial because if you try to submit to a non-commercial category, the Standard submission option will be offered in addition to the Yahoo Directory Submit paid option, discussed further below.

If it is non commercial you could have a look at dmoz, I find an entry there is picked up by most of the others anyway, more reliable & trusted as well because the site is actually checked by a human before listing

Yes thanks Farway. Dmoz looks familiar though, I may have submitted here before. Most of the sites on there are organisations and companies, rather than single person operated sites. They include commercial sites, they just don't want the description to sound like an advert. I might include an 'about' section on the site to describe what it is about to confirm it conforms with their requirements.0
