A comparison site's offering £125 cashback to new customers taking a Virgin home phone and broadband deal. Crucially, the cashback's automatically paid out after 90 days; you needn't jump through hoops to get it.

This means the basic landline and broadband package comes to just shy of £15/mth. Full details on what you get for the cash below. Virgin's broadband comes highly rated, but its phoneline doesn't, so this deal's best for those who either make few calls or use override providers to cut costs.

Importantly, you must pay by direct debit and be billed online to get this price (the standard options). Other billing and payment methods are available at higher cost. Adding it all up, the cheapest deal works out at £14.90/mth.

It depends on your needs. If you want fast broadband you'll struggle to do better for the money in the current marketplace, but if you want a cheap landline for making calls you'll be better off elsewhere; Virgin's phone service is one of the most expensive out there.

The broadband (Size L, £12.50/mth)

Because it comes through Virgin's fibre optic cable network rather than ageing telecom lines, Virgin's broadband is second-to-none speedwise; it's one of the few providers who can live up to advertised speed claims. In this case the package offers unlimited downloads (subject, as ever, to fair usage rules) at 10Mbps, and customer feedback is largely positive.

As part of the deal you also get a wireless router and adaptor, though you'll pay £35 for installation (it's only free on triple deals with TV). This is factored in to the cost above. Virgin currently offers newcomers 2 months free broadband, meaning 12 months is £125 - thus it's effectively paid for by the cashback on offer.

It's possible to get the cashback on faster broadband packages too for a bit more monthly outlay.

The home phone (Talk Weekends size M, £11.99/mth)

At £11.99/mth Virgin's line rental is more expensive than BT's, and with less benefits. As part of this package you get unlimited free weekend calls to landlines, (and Virgin mobiles) though 0870 & 0845 numbers are still charged at 10p/min. All chargeable calls carry a 10p connection fee, and calls to mobiles can cost up to 29p/min - pretty hefty in these mobile times.

I called today and the guy from Simplify digital was extremely helpful and friendly and called me back at the time I requested to the minute. You don't often get that, and I know they want the sale, but I've had to call countless companies this week as we're moving house and none of them have been remotely close to this one in the customer service stakes.

I was using override provider 0.5p/min 08442050505 until I realised that Virgin were surcharging me 11p connection fee and at least (variable) 4p/min on top of the 0.5p/min.rounded up + vat. - not so cheap. currently using Skype.:(

Hi ya

I am very tempted to get this deal but would like to seek some advice before i sign on the dotted line.

I am currently on a 3 mobile broadband paying £15/month for 15GB monthly limit. My contract expired couple of days ago and am thinking of getting a proper broadband with wireless router. Don't have a telephone line either. So this deal with cashback makes a lot of sense as i'll continue to pay £15/month but will get better broadband and a telephone line in addition. The only sticky point is that i might have to move house in 3-4 months time and am afraid that virgin might charge me an arm and leg to move the connection to the new place.

So in your expert opinion, should i stay with 3 mobile broadband untill i move the house or should i get the virgin deal with the cashback. I should state that i got loadsa minutes on my 3 mobile so dont need landline to make calls. However, it'll be much cheaper for our family and friends from Norway/India/Canada/Italy to call us on landline so it's worth having it.

Looking forward to the suggestions:).

Oh no, now I've got myself all confused with all the hundreds of options to choose from! Tempted to go for this as the cashback is great and effectively covers the broadband for the year but the call charges are extortionate. Thanks ddtq for this info.

It's good you can get 5p calls to landlines for an hour with 18185, maybe the 11p connection charge would be liveable with if using this.........

Any thoughts anyone?

Wow.......that's a real rip-off! I was considering a Virgin package but that that has scuppered it! We frequently dial relatives (not all would get on Skype) overseas via overrides on BT and get 'hours' of chat for just a few pence. This well hidden charging structure would cost us a fortune.

They provide a 0808(freephone) number for access so virgin charge nothing for calling it the only fees are to 18185 which are very reasonable even for cable users
