how long should a 13kg gas bottle last

Following on from my recent thread about Shell not delivering my gas we bought a 13 kg gas bottle and rigged this up to the house as it turned out there was a pipe to make this possible out the back of the house.

Basically whats happened is we moved into a property and didnt receive the paperwork to get the lpg tank and gas supply into our names. We managed to place an order and pay up front and now 10 days later we still havnt had the delivery from shell. Apparently we are down for a priority delivery but hey ho its hasnt happened. They aim for normal delivery within 5 days and clearly we are already passed that. I call everyday asking for an update and the staff member put forward a customer complaint as she deemed it wrong that we are waiting so long. This was on Saturday but I havnt heard anything about that yet. Anyway we still have no date for delivery and have go call at 4pm today to see if we are scheduled for tomorrow but I dont hold out much hope.

Anyway we bought this 13kg bottle on Sunday and this was connected up on Sunday night so we had heating and hot water. It has really only been used for heating as we dont cook on it and the shower is electric but already it is empty. Can this be right? It seems very expensive, its only been used from Sunday night to this morning when it has gone off. I have no idea how long it should last so please help me if you can. It looks like we will have to buy another bigger bottle. Shells non delivery is costing us a fortune in gas bottles and electric as we are having to use the electric fire and other fan heaters to heat the whole house.

Thank you to anyone who can offer any advice. Its really getting beyond a joke now.

We have a 47kg bottle that supplies our hob, this lasts us between 11 - 14 months.

A 47kg bottle on a static caravan doing heating and water would normally last us 2 weeks.

  • We use the 13kg in our little gas fire, one 1 bar it would last about 5 - 6 weeks.
If you have CH then i'm not surprised its run out so quick.
  • How long will it last?

What is the Calorific value of LPG?
    Commercial Propane = 13.83 kWh/kg
    Commercial Butane = 13.62 kWh/kg

This means a 13 kg bottle will give you about 176 kwh. Then you need to reduce this due to your boiler efficiency, say 85%. So you get about 150 kwh.
As an example, this would allow a 20kw boiler to run continuously for 7.5 hrs. They don't burn continuously, but hopefully you get the idea?
