Hello!
I currently have a contract with O2, will be up in november (started contract in November last year) this is an online tariff - 02 200
I pay about £38 pound per month for 500 texts and 200 minutes. I use 500 texts and 100 minutes, my bills come in at abouit £42 per month. Is there anyway I can cut back now, before my contract is up and what's the cheapest option once I am eligible for an upgrade?

Yes you can ask them to move you to a lower tariff. I had ano online contract with O2, and used the online contact service, but I am sure you can also phone them
I think you have to stay on your current contract for 6 months before you can change to a lower tariff, which you have done now. Your contract will still expire in November if you do this.
You wont be eligible for an upgrade until November when your 12 months is up. Worth threatening to leave though, as they will give you better deals and might give you better value for money.0
