Giving an old dog more bounce!

Options
I have a 14 year old dog and a 2 year old. The older one has only been with us for 4 months, we went to the dog's home to get a playmate for the younger one and came out with Malcolm:rotfl:
He had been there for 3 years and I hated the thought of him dying there, I know we won't have him long but I want to make his last months/days nice for him.

He has some arthritis and takes flexicam and seraquin, he also has a lump on his chest but, after talking to the vet we are leaving it alone.

Sorry I'm waffling now:o what I want to know is if there is anything else we can do for him to improve his life, he is a lovely old lad who has had a terrible life but still adores everyone.

Thanks for reading.

  • Hi
My dog is aorund 12 and has some arthritus and a neurological problem.
I was giving her synoquin for her joints but after reading the threads, I have now changed it to glucosamine/chrondoitin and omega 3 fish oils from the health food shop.
They are for humans but have the same ingredients as for the dog but are so much cheaper.
She has only been on them for a few eeks but I think she has abit more movement and energy.
My dog also has quite a big lump on her chest but the vet thinks it is a fat lump and believe me in the last year my dog has had so many tests, it i untrue.
So hopefully your days/months will be a few years. I don't want to think of my Kimber leaving me anytime soon.
No she's not the lively dog she thought she was a year ago but not ready to go just yet, she's my baby.

I asked the vet about giving human glucosamine but he said it is totally different and not as strong! I will look into it again though, I don't mind the cost but if I can save a bit he can have more treats.
We have never seen him lively, he plods everywhere:rotfl:

    Thanks for the reply.

Our old girl is nearly 16 and is on all sorts of medication but still has a bit of a spring in her step if she thinks she might get some human food!

Do you have access to water so that the dog could swim - something like a heated pool would be ideal if the dog likes water - I know that some vets have access to these facilities - not sure of cost but he would probably enjoy that and the water would support his joints. Alternatively if you are near a beach that would be okay - dogs tend not to feel the cold in the water - just make sure you have a nice big dry towel to wrap him in when he comes out.

Other than that, lots of attention, cuddles and playing with him (and the younger one as well so there is no jealousy) and you will do more for him that lots of drugs can do as he will be so happy!!

I think you have already done the most important thing - given him a real home of his own for his twilight years. Bless you for doing it.

I get "human" Glucosamine from zipvit, they do petvits too my cousin gets things for her dog from there. Might be worth trying the flex a joint?

or possibly these herbs from csj - the user feedback sounds good.

Not tried any of these personally but the prices are reasonable enough.

    Good luck!

I started reading this thread earlier but ended up balling my eyes out, so couldn't post.

I just wanted to say how brilliant it is that you've taken Malcolm into not only your home but your hearts. What a lovely story and so kind.

I'm balling again, but said what I wanted to :o

It's a wonderful thing that you have done, it's nice to know finally he has found a loving home, hopefully he will be able to enjoy this for at least a few years.
