Well it seems like Malcolm has finally found his guardian angel. Its lovely to know that there are still some kind hearted people still out there.
As others have said you have done a wonderful thing.
May God bless you and your family, Malcolm will repay your kindness with love and very wet doggy licks. I wiish I could meet him, he sounds a wonderful old boy. Please keep us up to date with him wont you. Of course it goes without saying if I/we can help just shout up.

Similar to you, I got my 7 year old labrador from a rescue. He had arthritis on his left leg such that he uses his right leg to walk all the time. In his walks, he would run around initally and then come limping back 10mins later and gives me that look which suggests that he's in pain. So, you could see that its not the ideal quality of life for him as he is still like to run around and smell everything.

I had a chat with the vet and she suggested Catrophen. It is an injection that, according to the website "...that provides pain relief by acting on the pathology within the joint that causes the pain. It also protects and supports the recovery of joint cartilage that is damaged by the arthritic process.." He had an inital 4 weekly loading dose and by the third injection, he is able to run around the field for almost an hour without limping!!:)

Right now, he's past his loading doses and is on a monthly dose for the next 6 months. Comparing his before and after injection attitude and behaviour, it has changed considerably.

In short, if you want to get his "bounce" back, you could try Catrophen.. As a guide, an injection is about £17-£20. I think this is nothing compared to the better quality of life your dog is going to have.

PS:I have no vested interest in the company that created Catrophen, but maybe I should have done !!!:D

What a really kind & compassionate person you sound. Wish there were more animal lovers like you around. Malcolm might not have time on his side but he's going to be well looked after and loved. What more could any dog/person want.
    Big hug to Malcolm.
