Hi, sorry I don't know what sipgate is. I am not very technical
In one of the emails they said they have to phone on a landline to confirm your address. I gave up in the end and gave the stuff to charity. I didn't want to be a big seller just sell a few bits.Life is not the way it’s supposed to be. It’s the way it is. The way you cope with it is what makes the difference.0 -

Sipgate is (one provider of) Voice over IP, where you can make and receive phone calls over the internet using your broadband instead of a landline. Registration is usually free, or a small charge and you get a geographic number for incoming calls. You download a small, also free, program and plug in a headset into your laptop.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0 -

Yes, it does work - done it.
We haven't had a landline for about 2 years now.
We did have one, but when we found 3G was as quick as ADSL (here, anyway) we used that instead. Since upgrades it's now a fair bit quicker than it used to be - usually.
If you can get cable then there's no particular need for a landline unless you really want one - they're pretty dated things now (I did read about 1 in 8 people who used to have landlines have now got rid of them)
It you can't get cable a landline is useful for ADSL.
If the ADSL is pants, you may be better off both financially and in speed by using 3G instead.
Longer voice calls can be done over VOIP which is just as good as our phone line was for quality though it can stutter now and again and you don't want to have half a dozen downloads on the go at the same time.0 -
Not having a geographical number can affect your credit rating, but you can easily get around this by getting a local number from sipgate. You dont even have to answer it, you can divert to voice mail and it will mail you to tell you you have a message to listen to.
Given that some sim only deals short contracts include inclusive 01/02/03 minutes from only £10 a month its worth considering, especially in short term situations.
3 are now offering for £10 a month
Unlimited landline
FREE Skype-to-Skype calls
FREE Windows Live Messenger
FREE voicemail

I cancelled mine last year, and since then have managed with a cheap PAYG mobile phone and mobile broadband. I haven't missed it.
This is a good way to avoid cold calls; on the other hand as others have said some companies do expect a landline when you register. Some people give a friend's number.
I did an investigation before I terminated my BT account in case I had overlooked something important. A landline helps to tell emergency services where you are calling from, and the power supply may still be there in a disaster.Who having known the diamond will concern himself with glass?
